mud and blood.”
“We all need showers,” Gargoyle said. He cringed as he stood. “And maybe a soak in the hot tub.”
“I could go for a hot tub trip,” Transistor said and rolled his neck.
We all hobbled into the helicopter, covered in mud and blood, but alive.
Epilogue
The sunlight warmed my face as I looked up at the sun with my eyes closed. The sounds of waves crashing and friends laughing made me smile.
Hurricane, Vortex, Black Hole, and Tremor battled against each other in volleyball. Tyson and Austin worked side by side on an elaborate sand castle complete with a bridge and a moat. Crystal, Alura, and Yu splashed in the surf, laughing the entire time. Yu, the panda-shifting hero, had joined us as well, telling us we owed her for fighting a fellow hero. We hadn’t objected, which seemed to surprise her. It took a single hour before she said something sarcastic and was welcomed into our group of girls.
Transistor accepted the offer to become a hero. He said, “I need to keep all my options open to be able to keep an eye on you. You are more than a handful.”
We took two weeks off, one week we spent at Tyson’s mansion, being pampered by Marvin. The second week we came to the beach where, much to no one’s surprise, Tyson had a beach house.
I brushed sand off my butt as I stood and headed towards the water to join my friends where they were splashing each other.
“You need sunscreen,” Austin called out.
I laughed and shook my head. “You guys just put some on me an hour ago. I’m fine.”
“Alfred?” Tyson asked.
“She is currently not in need of another application,” the droid answered as he hovered behind me.
I looked up at him and smiled. “Thanks.”
His new metal body reflected the sun as he dropped lower to come closer to me. “You are welcome, Lucky.”
I turned and ran into the surf, kicking water at the three girls.
Lucky was definitely how I felt. Four amazing boyfriends, three awesome girl friends, and a job fighting monsters. It didn’t get much better than this.
“Get her!” Crystal yelled.
Before I could react, Yu and Alura grabbed me and dunked me under the water.
I came up spluttering and wiping hair and water out of my eyes. “Hey! No teaming up.”
“Why not? There’s an even number,” Yu said. “I bet you and I could take those two.”
I looked over at Crystal and Alura and smirked. “I bet we could. Chicken fight!”
Crystal chuckled. “Oh, you are so on! Alura, on my shoulders.”
I squatted down in the water and Yu climbed onto my shoulders, wrapping her legs around my back. “You’re going down!”
“That’s what she said!” Crystal shouted.
Alura and Yu clasped hands, preparing to try to push each other off their opponent’s shoulders, but all of us stopped and devolved into laughter.
Yu fell off my shoulders into the ocean as she and I laughed. Alura bent over Crystal’s head as she laughed.
“Lunch!” Tyson called from the deck of his house.
“Last one there is a rotten monster egg!” Yu yelled and ran out of the water and up the beach.
“Cheater!” Alura yelled after her, racing to catch up.
Crystal draped an arm around my shoulders and smiled down at me. “Thanks for becoming my friend.”
I smiled and said, “I’m pretty sure that’s my line.”
“Fine, then you owe me drinks tonight,” she said and laughed.
“Only if you help me destroy Austin and Tyson in the sand castle race,” I said.
She smirked, turned, slapped her hands together, and then wiggled her fingers at the ground. A gorgeous crystal palace slid up out of the ground beside theirs, sparkling and perfect.
My mouth dropped.
“No fair!” Tyson yelled. “You’re not supposed to use your powers.”
“Says who?” Crystal asked with hands on her hips.
Hurricane and Vortex each took one of my hands and swung them as we joined the others. I kissed their cheeks before joining the girls at the table where they were already drinking margaritas.
“How are things going with your new boyfriends?” I asked Alura.
She blushed. “I don’t have boyfriends. If you’re talking about my new partners, things are going pretty good.”
I couldn’t wait to see how things progressed for her in both her training and her relationships.
Tyson kissed my cheek and set a burger on the plate before me. “The most beautiful girl gets the first burger,” he said.
“Lucky,” Yu whispered.
Yes, I was definitely lucky. The luckiest woman in the entire world.
