arm’s length and scowled. “However, it also explains your insane tendency to try anything, including things that are potentially suicidal. We are going to have to work on that.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I said, pulled away from him, and headed into the house. “I’m always super careful.”
“She doesn’t know what careful means. Should I read her the definition from the dictionary?” Alfred asked.
“Hey! Whose side are you on? You’re supposed to be mine.”
Tyson scooped me up into his arms, holding me against his chest so our faces were level. “I’m serious, Lucy. I don’t want to have to bring you back to my lab to heal you again. It hurts seeing you so injured.”
Gently, I rested my hand against his cheek and smiled. “I promise I’ll try to be more cautious and not throw myself into danger if possible. Not that it will be easy since I’m a hero, but I will do my best to keep my injuries to a minimum.”
He smiled and kissed me. “Thank you. Now, I’ve got something to show you.”
Being carried in his arms was nice.
Really nice.
He led me down the hallway, up some stairs, down another hallway, and then set me down on my feet in front of a set of doors with a flower carved into it.
I traced the flower with my fingertip and the doors swung open, revealing a bedroom decorated in reds and golds.
“Whoa,” I whispered, stepping inside to get a better look.
The bed was a four-poster bed with a huge, fluffy comforter and pillows that looked even fluffier.
“This is yours,” he said.
I spun around. “What?”
He smiled. “This is your room. I wasn’t sure how you would want to decorate it, so you can change it if you want to, but I hope it isn’t awful.”
“It’s gorgeous, Tyson. What do you mean it’s my room, though?”
He sat on the end of the bed. “I’d like for you to stay over on occasion and since we haven’t moved that far in our relationship yet, I wanted to provide you with a place of your own to sleep. Plus, I know it’s nice to always have a place of your own to escape to.”
“Your laboratory is yours, isn’t it?” I guessed, sitting beside him.
He chuckled. “Most times, yes.”
“What if I want to share your bed?” I asked.
He smiled. “I would definitely welcome that, but this still stays your room.”
“Can we add a—”
He interrupted me, clapped his hands twice, and the wall before the bed slid open, revealing another room with a desk, computer, and a ton of other equipment I wasn’t certain of.
“An office?” he guessed.
I laughed, nodded, and walked into it. “This is so much.”
He slid his arms around my waist and kissed my cheek. “This, my beautiful girlfriend, is just the beginning. Wait until Giving Day.”
“I can’t return—”
He shook his head, stopping me. “Gifts are not comparable by price. Gifts are comparable by the thought behind them. Don’t expect me to just give you super expensive gifts with no thought. That’s what those other rich losers do. No, I will only give you gifts that are worthy of you and mean something to me and hopefully to you as well.”
“Now I’m feeling even more pressure on getting you a good gift,” I muttered. “What do you get the man who has everything and can buy anything?”
He smiled. “I’m sure you’ll think of something. Even a handmade card would be amazing.” He paused and his brows furrowed as he scowled. “I don’t think I’ve ever gotten a handmade card, actually.”
Oh, I was totally making him a handmade card now.
“So, is this what you wanted to show me?” I asked.
He nodded. “I was hoping you might stay the night tonight instead of going back to the Association.”
“She can’t stay,” a raspy female voice said.
We both spun towards the door.
In the doorway, a woman in a blue dress with a lab coat over it held Alfred in her hands, a pair of goggles on that was emitting a bright green light.
“Arm!” Tyson yelled.
Nothing happened.
She looked up so she could meet Tyson’s eyes and rolled hers. “Please, I deactivated your systems when I got onto the grounds.”
He stepped up beside me. “Who are you?”
“She’s my mom,” I whispered. “Mom, what are you doing here?”
“Your dad contacted me. He told me that he was worried because you were hanging out with some strange men. He asked me to check up on you and ensure you weren’t headed down a path we couldn’t help
