said, cocking her hip and resting a hand on it. “I’ve seen her smiling most of the time when she’s around everyone else.”
Hurricane came up to my other side. “Yeah, you seem to make most women frown. You might consider working on your stamina. It helps in the bedroom and then the women will be less likely to frown.” He winked at Cobalt and propelled me forward and into the waiting helicopter with a hand on my lower back.
I sat and buckled myself in. “Thanks,” I whispered.
“Your hands were glowing, so I figured it was safer to get you away from him before you wrecked our plane.”
The fact that I hadn’t even realized my powers had activated was bad. I needed to up my practice and conditioning.
“If you’re looking to get laid, Hurricane, you’d be better off looking elsewhere,” Cobalt said from behind us.
Hurricane looked at me with the most devilish smile, and I had to remind myself that I didn’t even know if he was single. He replied, “One, you’re not my type, Cobalt. Two, I’m not looking for a quickie. Thanks for the offer, though. I’m flattered.”
Slapping a hand over my mouth, I managed to keep from laughing out loud.
Hurricane extended his closed fist, and I bumped mine against it.
Cobalt’s fury was almost palpable.
The blades on the helicopter began to spin, and I gripped the seat on either side of me. My right hand clasped Hurricane’s on accident, so I quickly released him.
He held out an open palm.
I took the invitation, gripping his hand with mine.
His thumb rubbed the back of my hand. “It’ll be fine.”
I nodded and licked my lips, which suddenly felt very dry.
We lifted off smoothly and flew for several miles with no bumps.
As we flew by one of the creatures, the helicopter had to bank to the right quickly to avoid debris being thrown at us.
With a squeak, I tightened my grip on Hurricane’s hand. A bit of my power streaked into our joined hands.
I gasped and tried to let go, but he set his other hand on mine and leaned down to meet my gaze. “Your power won’t hurt me. Elemental, remember?”
I nodded and relaxed back in my seat, or relaxed as much as one could when flying high up over the city.
The four of us were being sent to town as a team. Had they put Cobalt on my team on purpose? Was this a test?
If it was, I needed to set aside our differences and focus on the tasks at hand. I couldn’t afford to look bad now when the spotlight was on me.
I reached for my phone to text Transistor and cursed. I had left it in the changing room. At least I’d put it in my locker, still in my other outfit.
“Forgot your phone?” Hurricane asked.
I nodded. “Oh well. My friend will just have to watch the news like everyone else to see what’s going on.”
He leaned closer, his lips right next to my ear and asked, “Are you actually single?
I turned and whispered back, “I’m not in a committed relationship. I am dating, but they know I am not ready to settle with one guy. I want to be more careful in who I spend my time and energy with. Plus, I don’t want it publicized who I’m dating.”
He smiled, turned, and typed a message to someone on his phone.
My brows furrowed. Who was he messaging? Was he just trying to find something to use against me?
He turned back to me and whispered, “Let’s talk over drinks tonight.”
I was still suspicious, but I nodded my agreement. Hopefully, this wouldn’t backfire on me.
Chapter Ten
The Director had assigned us to a creature that hadn’t exhibited elemental powers.
As soon as we touched down, we found that our intelligence was incorrect.
Thankfully, Hurricane was with us and used a wall of ice to keep the boulders the creature had thrown at us from hitting the helicopter.
With low and quick movements, we exited the helicopter and moved around a high-rise building to try to sneak around behind it.
Hurricane took the lead, while Cobalt took up the rear. Crystal Woman and I moved side by side, our heads on swivel to keep from being surprise-attacked.
The ground beneath us rumbled. We all paused, but Hurricane waved us forward.
Around the building, we found a family hiding behind a dumpster.
Without a word, Cobalt picked up the kids, turned, and led them away, towards safety.
Hurricane paused at the corner, peeking out, but then he bolted from our hiding place.
