tennis classes? Nothing. I hate tennis. And bowling, for the record, which was the other option I had available last semester for my required class in physical fitness or whatever. Ugh. But yeah, we’re taught all this stupid shit and not real practical stuff that can help. Did you know that Ashley’s dad gave us all a lecture about investing and saving when we first met?”
“Breathe, Heather.” Logan waited until she pulled in a breath. “Good. And no, I didn’t know that.”
“Well, yeah. Because he was mad we weren’t taught basic finances in school. Saving and investing is important, and if more people our age put aside just twenty dollars a month—um, anyway, that wasn’t the point. The point is, everyone should know how to take care of themselves, both physically and financially.”
Logan had begun to wonder if she’d ever get back to it.
She paused and looked at him with a deep frown. “So I kinda told Randy when we were going to be here next, and he kinda just texted me that he was going to come by too.”
Logan dropped his head onto his hands. “Heather.”
“I know. You’re mad. I’m an ass. God. I’ll tell them to leave, but hell, Logan, they’re cops, you know? Randy and his partner both wanted to come, and that’s saying something, you know? Like, what kind of training do they get?”
Randy wasn’t hanging around to get training. Logan didn’t need his alpha senses to tell him that. He wanted to know more about Logan and his… about what Randy assumed was his pack.
“They get plenty of training.”
“Yeah, but not by you guys. You’re like… super soldiers or something, right? I mean, the all-black uniforms are kind of a dead giveaway. You should try blue sometime. Your eyes get this—anyway, not important. Oh, and I forgot to mention the SWAT vehicles in the garage. Another clue that you’re, like… whatever. You should really get a sign put on the door, though. It’s more mysterious when there’s not a sign on the place. Makes people ask questions.”
Three vehicles approached the warehouse. Logan held back his growl. “You’re cleaning up the mats on your own after training.”
Heather’s eyes widened. “What?”
“You heard me. My time doesn’t belong to you, and it wasn’t right for you to volunteer it without talking to me first. So after we train the guys who just parked in front of my warehouse as a favor to you, you’re going to clean and sanitize the mats by yourself afterward.”
Her eyes narrowed. “Fair. You suck. But that’s fair. I’m sorry, Logan. It won’t happen again.”
“Good.”
She stomped down the stairs and went to open the door for Randy and the others.
“You can stop eavesdropping now.”
Bailey opened the door from the break room and gave him a sheepish grin. “Do I gotta clean something too?”
Logan turned and snagged Bailey’s wrist. He pulled Bailey close and stared down at him. “I have something else in mind for you.”
“Oh yeah?”
“Lasagna.”
Bailey backed up a step and growled. It wasn’t anywhere near that of a wolf, but it brought a smile to Logan’s face anyway. Then Bailey laughed. “You’re sneaky.”
“I am. But you promised the guys a lasagna night, and it’s been weeks. If I have to hear one more dropped hint, I’m going to injure one of them.”
“No, you won’t.”
“I might.”
Bailey scoffed. “If I make everyone lasagna, what do I get in return?”
“Our undying gratitude,” Aleron shouted from the mats. “Now get your butt down here and help me demonstrate some moves before Logan starts mauling you again.”
“I already have your undying gratitude,” Bailey yelled back. “Do better.”
“I’ll get you a credit card with no limit, and the bill will come to me?”
“Oh, take that offer,” Ashley said. “We can do a lot with that.”
“Deal,” Bailey said. “And I’ll throw in some bonus garlic bread for your generosity.”
Aleron beamed and began sorting the newcomers into pairs. Bailey and Ashley passed on the stairs as she came up to the break room. She came back out a minute later with a bottle of water in her hand.
“Keep your eyes on that one,” Ashley said softly.
Logan glanced at her and found her sharply glaring down at Randy. The cop had his partner and a few other guys who appeared to know Will and Joey with him. Although Logan’s team had perked up at Ashley’s words, Randy didn’t appear to be listening in. Logan looked over the others as well. Nothing jumped out at him as suspicious, but he trusted Ashley’s instincts.
“Why?”
“He’s
