he saw Josh had his guy under control.
"They're coming. Look out."
He turned and saw two men coming from the back of the building pulling weapons from their waistbands. Jumping up he pulled his weapon and ran a good distance around the corner of the building.
Josh followed him around the corner and stopped when Axel did with backs to the wall. Axel took the left side of the wall, and signaled Josh to take the right. As they each crept to their end of the wall, they waited for more men to follow them issuing commands.
A side door on the left, which smelled like it led to the kitchen, had wooden wind barriers on both sides of it. Axel made his way to the first wooden barrier and ducked between the wooden barriers. He whispered into his comm unit.
"Josh, back here between the wooden barriers."
Peeking down each side, he saw Josh rapidly, but quietly, making his way and nothing on his side. When Josh reached him, they found two large dumpsters on the left side of one of the wooden barriers, both in need of emptying by the odors coming from them. And there were several used beer barrels stacked haphazardly against the side of one of the dumpsters.
Taking another look around beyond the side of the building the backdoor opened, surprising them all and out stepped Victor Boyko, escaping out the kitchen door. Classic. Luckily, he was also alone. This meant the rest of the men were on their way around to nab Axel and Josh.
Victor Boyko was as surprised as Axel and Josh, but not fast enough to turn and run back in. Axel grabbed him by the collar and tossed him to the ground and Josh quickly jumped on him and pulled his comm unit from Victor Boyko’s waistband. Tucking it in his pocket to analyze later Josh quickly threw a few punches at Victor Boyko and knocked him out, then checked him for weapons. Finding a small handgun, Josh pocketed that as well.
Pushing Victor Boyko against the kitchen door, both men looked around the wooden barriers to see men coming from both sides.
"Here we go." Axel huffed out.
Stepping around one barrier Axel shot the two men coming his way. The element of surprise is always important. Both went down. He turned quickly to see two men coming from the opposite side with their guns raised at Josh. Why wasn’t Josh ready? He knocked out Victor Boyko. One was within a couple of steps of them, gun trained at Josh's head.
Just then a horn blaring and the gunning of an engine could be heard, and the two men turned to see the rental vehicle barreling toward them at breakneck speed.
Surprise was replaced with relief when he saw Bridget behind the wheel. She ran the vehicle close to the building and hit the furthest man from the action before he could jump out of the way. His partner took off running but didn't have the speed he needed to get out of the way. Both he and Josh jumped to the side of the building and Axel prayed she'd turn away from them or stop. Otherwise, they'd both be in some serious pain soon.
She turned the steering wheel, just before hitting Josh and slammed on the brakes. The SUV skidded to the side and twisted, hitting the wooden wind barriers, and knocking them over, which also meant they lay on top of Victor Boyko.
"What the hell is going on over there?" Gaige could be heard over their comm units.
"We need local PD. Victor Boyko is down, not dead. We do have the ground littered with bodies though. Not sure how many of them are dead or just out. Gonna need a couple of ambulances, too."
"Local PD is on the way. I called when I heard Bridget say you were being followed out of the bar."
"Roger."
Axel leaned against the SUV to let his heartbeat slow and his mind clear. That was some shit. He looked over at Josh, who leaned against the side of the building doing the same thing and nodded to his teammate, who nodded back. Axel looked down the side of the building where the two men he shot still lay waiting for movement and hoping they didn't move. At least not until PD got here.
The vehicle door opened carefully, and he turned to see Bridget getting out of the driver’s seat, her skin pale and her eyes wild.
She stepped down from the SUV and inhaled deeply.
