loved you,” he said. “The part where we fell for you.”
She paused and looked out the window again.
“It’d be so complicated,” she said after a long few moments. “Relationships are so complicated with just one person. Are you guys sure that you want to do it with four people?”
The conversation had taken a drastic turn, and the three of us looked at each other.
“Yes?” I asked. I was more asking than stating a fact. We had talked about this, of course, but when it came down to it, I wasn’t sure if anyone was really able to go through it.
“It would mean sharing me,” she said. “There wouldn’t be a favorite There wouldn't really be private time. And if I was to get pregnant...there wouldn’t be one father. I wouldn’t bother to find that out.”
“I’m not sure you could find that out,” Jonathan said. “I mean...technically They do DNA tests to test for fathers, but siblings who were triplets...would be impossible.”
“Thank you?” Jacob said, and Johnathan glared at him.
“What?” he asked. “What’s wrong with just saying the truth?”
“Nothing is wrong,” Jenny said. “I appreciate that you said that because it makes it even more real, what we might be doing.”
“We all want an heir,” I said. “But no one wants it if the situation is terrible and everyone is unhappy.”
“And you don’t think we could be entering that territory if we did things like that?” she asked.
I sighed.
“I don’t know,” I said. “I would hope not. No one can predict the future, Jenny, and no one can change the past. We just have to be the best we can be...right here, right now.”
“Right,” Jenny said. “But are you three OK with it?”
Suddenly, something clicked in my head.
“Are you saying that you are OK with it?” I asked. She shrugged
“Only if you guys are all right with it.”
I felt like all the cards were laid on the table at this point. I didn’t know what to say. I didn’t know what to do.
I turned to my brothers, who seemed just as much in shock as I was. Perhaps preparing for this possibility and actually doing it were two different things.
“I’m in,” Jacob said slowly. The three of us turned to Johnathan.
“What, I’m the one who has to decide?” he asked. “That’s not fair.”
“You don’t have to decide,” I said. “But we wouldn't want to leave you here.”
“Yeah…” he paused. “I get that. As long as you guys aren’t going to be weird and blame things on social media again…”
“Oh my God,” I put my head in my hands. “You don’t know that it wasn't social media, Jonathan.”
“It wasn't!” he cried, and Jenny put her arms out.
“Can we just agree on this one fact before we argue about a new one?” she asked.
The three of us looked at each other.
“Yes,” I said.
“Yes,” Jacob said.
“Yes,” Johnathan said. With the decision made, we turned to Jenny.
“Well,” she said. “I guess that’s it.”
“We’re...going to do this?” I asked, and she smiled.
“Yes,” she said. “Everyone makes mistakes. And I am willing to give you guys the rest of my life to make up for it.”
“Sounds good,” we said, and then we embraced.
It was the nicest hug I ever had. And then, somehow, we all managed to kiss her. She gave equal attention to all of us, which told me exactly how our relationship was going to go.
It was perfect. I never wanted to let her go.
“Are we still going on that…?” Anna watched into the room and then her eyes widened. “Oh my.”
“I think the picnic will have to wait,” Jenny said with a grin. “We have other plans.”
“We do?” I asked her, and I recognized the look in her eyes.
“Oh yes,” she said. “Come with me, boys.”
I didn’t know what she had planned, but I could guess. The three of us grinned as we followed her upstairs.
“Bye!” Anna called, and I laughed.
“She’ll be your sister-in-law,” I said to Jenny.
“I’m fine with that,” she said. “And I can’t wait to meet the rest of the family.”
“We can’t wait to introduce you to them,” Jacob said. “They are going to love you as much as we love you.”
“Hopefully, just a little bit less,” she replied as we headed into her bedroom. A brief thought of all my brothers and their wives passed through my mind. Finally, I was just as happy as they were. Finally, we had found a mate, and we understood Nick’s words. When you know, you just know. Everything was perfect, and I couldn't
