said to Edward was that I didn’t know what the big deal was because we were not the first bears to capture a wolf’s mate.”
“I don’t think that is the problem,” Frances said. “My guess is that we are about to start a war.”
“So let him come at us,” Johnathan said. “I don’t care. I could take down a bunch of wolves any day.”
“The main concern,” I reminded him, “is who the hell told them.”
“What makes you think that someone told them?” Frances asked. “Are you sure that they didn’t hack us?”
“Do you know what kind of levels of encryptions I put on our stuff?” Jonathan said. “There is no way.”
“OK, so if there is no way to be a genius, how did they find out?”
“I don’t know,” Jonathan said with a shrug. “Maybe she got scared and told them.”
“Does Jenny act like someone who is scared?” I asked. “Or does she act like someone who is perfectly happy?”
“I agree with that,” Frances said. “She doesn’t act scared. I think she’s pretty happy.”
“So, what are we supposed to do?” I asked. “Just pretend that we don’t know that Edward called? Carry on? Come on, guys. We can’t do that.”
“Fine,” Frances said. “Why don’t just you just start questioning us?”
“What?” I asked, confused. “What are you talking about?”
“It’s obvious that you don’t trust us,” he said. “So why don't you just interrogate us until we tell you the truth?”
“The truth?” I asked. “Do any of you know something I don’t?”
"It's obvious that you think we do,” Frances said. “Don’t you think that he’s strutting in here acting like he’s the king of this place, Johnathan?”
“Hey, I don’t want to get in the middle of this,” Johnathan said. “But I do think you are certain in your little mind that one of us ran to the wolf council."
“I just have one question,” Frances said. “Why would we do that? Why would we send Jenny right back to the people who abused her?”
“I’m not saying that you did do that,” I said. “I’m just saying...something happened.”
Johnathan's phone pinged then, and for the first time in a long time, I saw him ignore it. I raised an eyebrow.
“Aren’t you going to get that?” I said, and he shrugged.
“It's fine, it’s just a Facebook message,” he said. As soon as he said that, it clicked in my mind.
“Of course,” I said. “Johnathan, you’re an idiot.”
He obviously didn’t take too kindly to that language, so he looked at me in annoyance.
“Sorry?” he asked.
“The social media,” I said. “You set her up on all of that.”
“Yeah, because she asked,” he said. “And it’s super encrypted when you put it in private. We’re the only ones who—”
“Look, if there three of us didn’t do it, that’s the only option,” I said. “That or Jenny told them.”
“God, Jonathan, how could you be such an idiot?” Frances asked. Johnathan looked like he was ready to explode.
“I’m sorry,” he said. “Unless they have super hacked, they never should have been able to find her.”
“Yeah, but you don’t control social media,” he said. “So you have no idea what’s possible and what’s not.”
“Guys…” I said, but it seemed like it was too late.
“No,” he said. “You want to accuse me, fine. I’ll take the blame. You should probably just fire me.”
“Johnathan, don’t be ridiculous,” I said. “This has nothing to do with work.”
“Nothing to do with work?” he asked. “If you guys think that someone hacking Facebook is my fault, then—”
“Can we just not fight?” I asked, but it seemed like it was too late. The one thing about the three of us no one seemed to know was that someone was always the peacemaker. Today, it was me, but I had a feeling that it wasn't going to be me for long. Whether or not it was an accident or on purpose, the information out there and Jenny was under more threat than ever before.
No one talked to each other for the rest of the afternoon. I could tell that our minds were a million miles away. This time, it seemed that no one wanted to rush home to her because we knew the others would blame us if we did.
How had this become us? This used to be a perfect relationship between the three of us. I think the real problem was what Edward brought up. All three of us wanted her, and we didn’t know what to do about it.
I hoped we figured it out soon because our business
