I suggested. “Neither of us got to eat much and that minibar wasn’t stocked very well to begin with.”
“Done,” he said, grinning. “Anything else?”
I tilted my head, thinking about what I really wanted. “Let’s just enjoy our evening together. In our pajamas. No over the top, billionaire type activities or clothes. Just normal life.”
“Normal life,” he agreed as I clinked my glass against his. “I’ll even see if I can convince the kitchen to bring us grilled cheese with tomato soup. Sound good?”
A smile tugged at the corners of my lips despite the day we’d had. It was easy to forget sometimes that he was the same Dane who’d spent so much time at my house that he knew what my childhood comfort food had been. I was surprised he’d remembered, but the knowledge that he had made something ease deep inside me.
This was Dane. Dane knew me and he knew where I came from. As long as I had him with me, there was a little bit of home right here with me. And that little bit of home was enough for now.
Chapter 30
DANE
The kitchen didn’t even blink at my request for grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup. They delivered our food to Leah’s room after I’d popped out to mine to grab a T-shirt and a pair of sweatpants, and we’d eaten together in her bed.
Two bottles of French wine had come to her room with our food, and we were well into the second before she turned to me with mischief in her eyes. “Have you ever been to this hotel’s pool? I think we should go check it out.”
“I think you might be right.” I climbed off the bed, holding a hand out to her once I was beside it. “It’s on the roof. I’m not sure if it’s open, but I’m sure we’ll find a way past the doors if we try hard enough.”
It was nearing midnight and the hallways were quiet as we made our way to the top of the building. The glass doors separating the inside from the outside section where the pool was located were closed, but when I tested the handle, we discovered they were unlocked.
Leah squealed with what I assumed was tipsy delight as she skipped almost all the way to the edge of the roof, taking in the sparkling blue water of the pool lit up from beneath and the view of the full moon reflecting over the sea just over the edge.
I stood a few feet back, watching her as she took it all in. The wine had left a pleasant buzzing in my veins, and when Leah suddenly turned around, launching herself at me with a wide grin on her face, I could only laugh.
The force with which she jumped into my arms made me sway and take a step back—right into the warm water of the pool. We both went in fully clothed, and she let go of me as she swam to the surface.
She was already in a fit of laughter when I popped up beside her. “This is awesome. We should do more of this during our downtime.”
“Yeah?” I asked, slicking my hair back as I treaded water beside her. “What’s that?”
“Cut loose and have fun.” She grinned, giving me no warning as she splashed a wave of water toward me. “Promise me we’ll do more of this after work in the future?”
“The swimming or the drinking?” I asked jokingly before shrugging. “But sure. I’m in for both.”
“Good, because I was talking about both. And eating normal food in bed and just talking.” She spun away from me to face the view, sighing contentedly before kicking her feet up to float half on her back in the water. “There’s not going to be much time for stuff like this though, is there?”
“There will be,” I said, mirroring her position to float beside her. “We have one more event in Paris tomorrow night. Then we’re headed home the day after. I’m sure we could fit in some sightseeing tomorrow afternoon, then cut loose a little after the event?”
“It’s difficult to believe that this trip is almost over,” she said after a minute, her eyes still on the clear, starry sky. “Time flies when you’re traveling, it seems.”
“This trip might almost be over, but there are a few more ahead of us,” I said. “Not for another couple of weeks, but they’re coming up soon enough.”
“You people really don’t waste time.” She sighed softly. “Where
