organizing for the champagne to be opened, poured, and passed around. Once most people had a glass of the stuff in their hands, she’d made her rounds and ended up in front of me next to the podium.
“I’m going to have to start keeping a closer eye on you, Mr. Oliver,” she said teasingly. “If you can hide organizing something like this from me, what else are you hiding?”
“A few things,” I said, then sent up a silent prayer as I started lowering myself down on one knee. I slid the box out of my pocket and was barely aware of the hush that had fallen over the gathered crowd as I looked up into her wide, very surprised green eyes.
I flipped open the top of the box and then held it up to her. “I’ve been hiding this from you, too. Not in my underwear drawer, but close enough to it.”
She stared at me in total disbelief, but I saw the moment that changed. The moment it got replaced with excitement as her gaze filled with love and her smile grew.
“I love you, Leah James,” I said, canning the whole speech I’d had planned in favor of just telling it to her the way it was. “I love you just the way you are and I want to spend the rest of my life loving the person you become. I want to keep growing with you, keep being surprised by you, and keep laughing with you. I want to be the lucky man who gets to see you go from strength to strength and face every challenge life throws at you without ever giving up. I am constantly in awe of you. Of how you beat down any insecurities with a stick and come out stronger. Of how you’ve never met a challenge you couldn’t fight with humor, a sassy attitude, and an incredible belief in who and what you are.”
“I’ve seen you at your lowest,” I said, pushing myself to keep going past the tightening of my throat. “And even when you’re at your lowest, you still never give up. You’re still this unbelievably strong woman who stands up, dusts herself off, and doesn’t let anything get you down.”
Tears slid from her eyes, and I reached for her hands after pulling the white gold ring out of its box. “I admire every single part of who you are, and if you’ll let me, I’d like to keep loving and admiring you for the rest of my life. Will you marry me?”
The next words out of her mouth changed my life, and I’d never have had it any other way. “Yes. Yes, Dane. Of course, I’ll marry you.”
