spin, we really can’t.”
“Yes, we can,” I said, aware that I was possibly starting to sound like a petulant child. “I’m the big boss in this room, and I say we can. There’s nothing anywhere that says we can’t.”
“You’re certainly the big something,” she teased lightly, wiggling in my lap again and making me groan as pleasure raced through me. “If you’re the type who needs to be the boss in the bedroom as well as the boardroom, then that’s cool, but we still can’t.”
I collapsed against the back of the couch, releasing her to run my hands through my hair as I looked up at her. “Why not?”
“We need to pump the brakes, Dane,” she said. “It’s the right thing to do. This isn’t on the table. I accepted a job, and I don’t want to complicate things by getting intimate.”
“Okay.” I blew out a breath, resigning myself to the fact that this wasn’t happening right now. “I don’t think it would have to complicate things, but I get where you’re coming from.”
“I wish I was coming,” she groaned, chuckling before she cupped my face in her hands and dropped her forehead against mine. “It’s really not a good idea, though. Apart from the work thing, there’s also the fact that you’re Rick’s best friend. How would we explain to him that we’ve been hooking up?”
“I wasn’t planning on explaining anything to him,” I said. “We’re both grownups. We can make our own decisions.”
“Sure, but we should make good ones and I don’t think this is a good one.”
I nodded slightly, exhaling before I shot her a grin. “If it’s not a good idea, why are you still on top of me?”
“That’s an excellent question.” She sighed, closing her eyes for a second before she got up. “I’m really sorry, Dane. I didn’t mean to be a tease. I just didn’t see that coming and we shouldn’t have let it go so far.”
She walked over to where I’d left our drinks, bringing them back before sitting down next to me on the sofa. Our fingers brushed when she handed mine over, and I looked into her eyes as I took it from her.
“I’ll be here any time if you change your mind,” I said, then tore my gaze away from hers as I leaned back and kicked my feet up on the coffee table. “For now, I believe I invited you over for the Toy Story. Are you still up for a movie night?”
Chapter 15
LEAH
It had been a week since things had gotten heated between Dane and me in this very apartment. Tingles raced through me as I walked into the penthouse, as impressed by the place as I had been the first time I was here.
The tingles weren’t because of the place, though. It was impressive as all hell, warm and cozy while also being modern and trendy, but the tingles were because of the man who lived here and not the place he lived in.
Dane’s kisses had set my insides on fire. He’d shown me what it was like to be kissed by a man, even if I hadn’t realized all the other guys I’d been with had been boys in comparison. Dane was like the big kahuna of kissing, and I desperately wanted more.
Unfortunately, I had to put on my big girl panties and get over it. One of the very good reasons for having to get over it was why I was back here on another Sunday night.
Rick was in town, and while I’d spent as much time with him as I could after work, things had been a little crazy at the office. For the same reason, Dane hadn’t gotten to spend as much time with him as he wanted to either, even though Rick was staying with him for the four nights he was here.
So tonight, it was the three of us just getting together and hanging out before my brother went back home in the morning. He’d flown in on Thursday to come to see a supplier on Friday but had decided to stick around for the weekend after his meeting.
Dane and Rick were sitting in the living room, beers open on the coffee table in front of them. Dane had buzzed me in but must’ve gone back to the conversation he’d been having with my brother after leaving the door open for me.
They both turned and waved when I entered the room. Rick stood up and opened his arms, pulling me
