was Chris.
It wasn’t like her boss didn’t know why she’d taken a vacation. Someone would notice she was missing, right?
“Are you hungry?” Liam asked as he rummaged around in the kitchen that was just as nice and luxurious as the living room.
Zoe liked the open floor plan, but she wasn’t sure she liked that Liam was always watching her. It was weird, and she didn’t get it. Where was everyone else? Why him? Was he some kind of bodyguard or a prison guard?
There was too much she didn’t know, and too much she wasn’t sure how to handle.
What was she going to do when her phone was charged enough to call her boss? How was she going to explain that Chris was in some kind of coma without any medical records? They were going to want to remove the both of them from this place, and if what she’d seen was true…
Then neither her nor Chris could afford to be taken to the hospital and have tests run.
Was there a way to know for sure that she was going to turn into a wolf like Liam? Maybe there was a chance that she wouldn’t.
“Hey, what’s wrong?” Suddenly Liam was standing right next to her, his hands on her arms. His eyes were full of worry and she pulled away, not understanding why he cared at all.
“Just a lot on my mind.” Zoe didn’t have the energy to give him attitude.
So, she grabbed the remote and turned the TV on, selecting one of the infinite streaming services. Cooking shows were her guilty pleasure. The Great British Baking Show started, and she slumped onto the couch, eyeing her phone.
“Okay, I’ll get something to eat. If you want some, go ahead, but no pressure.” Liam gave her the space she so desperately needed, but she found herself watching him more than she was watching her phone or the show.
There was something about the way he moved that drew her attention. Zoe didn’t understand it, especially when she’d never had any trouble around guys before, even Chris. She was always the one in control, always the one who decided if they were going to go forward or not.
Chris was a rare case. She’d never pursued him because they worked together. They’d fallen into the friend zone before she realized she had romantic feelings for him, and it just hadn’t been a good idea to try and do anything about those feelings.
Especially after watching his dating habits. Chris was a hopeless romantic with man-whore tendencies. He thought he wanted a happily ever after, and then chased anything and everything that caught his interest.
Liam though, Zoe didn’t know anything about Liam, but he had already been more faithful and attentive than any boyfriend or crush she’d ever had. Not that there was a lot to really compare it to, and the bar was on the fucking floor, but still…
No doubt it was whoever was running the show. Liam wouldn’t be here if he hadn’t been ordered to. They couldn’t let the new recruit figure out how to get off the property. What if she found out all their secrets?
Zoe scoffed and switched over to a different food show, one that followed a guy around China for the best eateries and recipes.
The screen on her phone lit up and Zoe snatched it just as Liam started setting various foods on the coffee table. Shit, there was a million missed phone calls and messages. Nothing from her dad or sister though.
That wasn’t all that unusual considering her schedule, but for some reason it still stung. Not even her roommate had messaged. Zoe had known that working the night shift had separated her from most people, but she hadn’t really felt it until now.
It was different knowing she lived in her own world, and then experiencing just how little anyone but her job realized she was missing.
Before she could second guess herself, she called her boss, chewing on her thumbnail. Rodriguez wasn’t going to like this, and she just might fire both her and Chris over it, but Zoe supposed she could always find work at a different hospital.
Zoe was one of the best trauma nurses in Oregon, hell on the West Coast. An accident wasn’t going to ruin her career.
An accident wouldn’t but turning into a wolf might.
She hung up before Rodriguez answered, turning the phone off before she freaked out. Zoe didn’t want to have to explain why she wasn’t sure when she was coming back. There
