crickets as our soundtrack, Theo touched and kissed me. When our bodies became one, all the pain and emptiness in my heart finally vanquished. We moved together, as one, and as I reached the pinnacle, I knew deep in my soul, that we’d be one forever.
Epilogue
Madeline
Did the tabloids speculate that I was just a brief on-set fling with Theo? Yes. Did some wonder out loud whether or not I slept with him to jump-start my career? Yes. Did I care? No. Well, there were moments that I did care, but then Theo would kiss me and tell me he loved me, and all my cares about what the public thought about me would vanish.
After our reconciliation, I moved into my sister’s guest room again, but when I never ended up sleeping there because I was in Theo’s bed, he suggested that I should move in with him. At first, I was shocked. I loved him and I believed he loved me, but moving in together seemed like a big deal. Too big after only a few weeks.
“Few weeks?” he said when I mentioned it. “It’s been nearly five months.” Then he gave me his sexy grin. “Five months of my lusting after you. Of wanting to see that gorgeous smile of yours every day.”
“Okay,” I agreed. “You’ve convinced me. But what about Oliver?”
“He has to find his own woman.” Theo scooped me up and carried me to the bedroom.
“That’s not what I meant.” I looped my arms around his neck.
“He’s found another place. It’s here in the building so we’ll be neighbors. Now, can we stop talking about Oliver?”
“What do you want to talk about?”
“Let’s see. How about how fantastic your tits are? Or maybe how badly my dick wants you?”
I laughed. “How bad does your dick want me?”
He set me down, and ground his hips against me.
“My, that is bad,” I said, gently biting and tugging on his lower lip.
“Have mercy on me, baby.”
I was Theo’s date to the premiere of Earthshot, and while some of the entertainment gossip people speculated on the potential longevity of our relationship, many reported how happy we looked.
The following week, we drove up to Woodstock to spend Thanksgiving with my grandparents. This year, Nadine would be absent as she was spending it with Alex. Oliver came with us.
As usual, my grandmother made enough food to feed an army, but fortunately, Theo and Oliver were good eaters.
“It’s time to say what we’re thankful for,” my grandmother said as we sat for dinner.
“That’s easy. I’m thankful for Madeline,” Theo said, taking my hand at the table.
“Suck-up,” Oliver said.
Theo winked at me. “That doesn’t make it not true.”
After dinner, Theo and I walked out to the pond while Oliver played rummy with my grandparents. Late November in New York could be cold, but with Theo’s arm around me, all I felt was the warmth of his love. It was a sappy thought, but I didn’t care. I was too happy to care.
“I love spending time with you here,” Theo said, somewhat absently like he was thinking it, but hadn’t meant to express it out loud.
“I’m glad.”
We reached the pond, the edges of which were frozen.
“That time I came up in the summer and had dinner with you and your grandparents, I felt so out of place.”
I turned to him, rubbing my hands over his chest. “I remember thinking that and wishing I could help you see that you were welcome.”
He looked down on me. “It wasn’t you or your grandparents that made me feel like that. It was just so foreign. All that warmth and love. That didn’t exist in my house.”
Theo and I had spent many late nights snuggled together, talking about our lives, and so I knew that his parents had been cold and distant to him. I wasn’t sure I’d ever be able to forgive them for that.
“Now, not only do you know it exists, but you’re a part of it,” I assured him.
He looked down at me. “Am I?”
I cocked my head, wondering what he was getting at. “Yes. Of course.”
He bit his lower lip and looked off in the distance for a moment. When he looked back, he asked, “Do you think I have it in me to create it? To build a home with that kind of love and warmth?”
“Yes, absolutely. We already have.”
He let out a long breath. “Not quite.”
Nerves skittered along my skin as I wondered what he was saying.
He took my hands, holding them to his chest. “Madeline, will you marry me?”
I gasped as I hadn’t been expecting that.
“I know it’s soon. I can guess at all the concerns you’d have about two celebrities and-”
“Yes. Yes, Theo, I’ll marry you.”
His eyes looked a little shocked. “I thought I’d have to talk you into it.”
I shook my head. “No. I love you. And I’m willing to do what needs to be done to make sure we live happily ever after like Gran and Pop-Pop.”
He pulled a ring from his pocket and slipped it on my finger. “You know, I’m the luckiest man alive. And I promise too that I’ll live each day making sure you’re happy.”
“You know, if our lives were a movie, we’d be a hundred on the sappy scale.”
He laughed. “Good.”
He kissed me, and in it, I felt all the warmth and love I knew he had to give. The future was unwritten, but I had no doubt that in fifty years, we’d still be here, loving each other. As it turned out, happy endings didn’t just happen in the movies.
