Jack waited for Joker to go, and when everyone was out of the office, turned to Fitz. “Are you sure?” The last thing he wanted was Fitz doing something he wasn’t comfortable with because he thought it was what Jack wanted. “You know I’m more than happy to hang out at your place or go out, just the two of us.”
Fitz planted a sweet kiss on Jack’s lips. “I do know. Thank you. I wouldn’t have said yes if I wasn’t sure. I won’t let what happened that night stop me from living my life, Jack. I love going out with you and the guys.” He slipped his arms around Jack’s waist. “Besides, give up a chance to see you shake that fine ass? Never.”
A loud laugh escaped Jack. “Well, in that case, I’ll be sure to wear my best ass-shaking pants.”
“You and Joker should really come equipped with some kind of warning system,” King said with a grunt as he walked to his desk.
Fitz pressed his lips together, clearly amused. He wrinkled his nose in question.
“King has really bad timing. Like, really bad,” Jack informed Fitz before mouthing the words, “I’ll tell you later.”
“Are you sure you don’t mean really good timing,” Ace said as he flopped down onto King’s couch.
“Why are you all in my office?” King grumbled, as if they’d only just appeared and hadn’t been there for the last half hour or so.
“Frank’s tonight,” Ace said. “We’re celebrating Joshua becoming Colton’s new executive assistant. He won the position by a landslide. Talk about trial by fire. The guy looks all sweet and innocent, but he’s got balls of steel. I didn’t think anyone could be as fierce as Nadine. None of the other candidates made it through an entire day.”
“Wow, I didn’t know Colton was that hard on his assistants,” Fitz said with a frown.
Ace sat up. “He isn’t, but a key part of his executive assistant’s duty is to manage his schedule. A schedule that requires nothing short of time travel to work because Colton is in wedding-planner mode, despite having several actual wedding planners.” He ran his hands through his hair in frustration. “I have to schedule time to be with him, and I’m the one he’s marrying!”
“Aw, poor baby.” Fitz left Jack’s side, and Jack watched in amusement as Fitz sat next to Ace and pulled him into a hug, patting his head. Ace soaked up the attention, making pitiful noises. “Have you told Colton you’re feeling a little… neglected?”
Ace sniffed.
Unbelievable.
“I’m scheduled to have dinner with him tonight after he meets with someone about napkins.” Ace sat up, eyes wide. “Napkins! Like I care if the napkins are shaped like swans or dolphins or whatever the fuck. They’re napkins! But no, I have to pretend that napkins are the most important thing in the world, because to him, they are. Or at least it seems that way.” Ace sat back with a sigh. “Fuck. If the wedding is this hard, what’s it going to be like after?”
“Ace?” Fitz said sweetly.
“Yeah?”
“Why do you think Colton cares so much about napkins?”
“Because he has a terrifying need to be in control down to the most minute details?”
“Or maybe because giving gifts is Colton’s love language, and the perfect wedding is his way of giving you a physical representation of the love he feels for you, so anything short of absolute perfection won’t do.”
Ace blinked at him, his eyes slowly widening. “Holy fuck.” His jaw dropped, and he moved his stunned gaze to Jack. “Holy fuck!” He sprang from the couch, a slow smile spreading across his face. “Oh, he’s a keeper.” Ace popped a kiss on Fitz’s cheek before darting from the room and calling out behind him. “See you all tonight!”
“Wow.” King turned his attention to Fitz. “That was impressive.”
Fitz did a little happy shimmy in his seat. “Thank you. I do try.” He stood and held out a hand to Jack, who took it. They left the room and Fitz turned to Jack. “Pick me up?”
“Sure.” Jack reached down and swept Fitz up, making him yelp. Everyone in the office burst into catcalls and whoops.
“Don’t encourage him,” Fitz scolded, though it was hard to take him seriously when he couldn’t stop smiling.
Jack set him on his feet, and Fitz shook his head, his smile reaching his eyes. He kissed Jack, a quick pop on the lips, before turning and heading for the elevator, smacking Lucky in the arm as he walked by after Lucky
