and was staring down at my hands as I folded, unfolded, then re-folded the wrapper over and over again. I shook my head.
“So just to be clear, you’ve been coming to school, but when you go home you’re there alone, and this has been going on for two, almost three weeks?” I nodded.
I was tired. So tired. I didn’t think that was only because I had no food, though. It was a lot of different things. At nights I was scared sometimes. This wasn’t new, but now that I had no electricity, I was also really cold, so I couldn’t always fall asleep, or stay that way. And when I did sleep, I was worried about being late for school—Mom always said if that I was late CPS would take me away—I thought my alarm clock might not go off, or the battery would run out, and I’d be late. I’d managed not to be late, but after trying so hard for nobody to notice what was happening, I was in trouble anyway, and suddenly I didn’t even care. Maybe CPS taking me away would be the best thing to happen.

The sound of bone shattering was one I shouldn’t enjoy, but I did. The satisfying crack was one of things and that kept me coming back again and again.
As my opponent’s nose shattered under my fist, I didn’t even stay long enough to watch him hit the deck. It was all over, and we both knew it. I turned around and began walking away, undoing my hand wraps as I went.
I didn’t bother to listen to the referee’s final verdict on the score. I’d fought and won, and that was all that mattered. That was all that ever mattered.

Acknowledgments
Thank you so much for reading Raine. By all accounts, he’s one of my most broken, most asshole-ish (if that’s even a word) heroes so far, yet somehow, in the end, that makes us love him more.
I know this one is a bit of a tear-jerker, so I apologize if you went through the Kleenex, especially at the end there. I hope however, that you appreciate the HEA, and you no longer hate me. Kidding. Kind of. #SorryNotSorry
As ever, I’d like to thank everyone who had a hand in getting this baby out the door. He wasn’t the easiest to write, for one reason or another, but I hope in the end, he was worth the blood, sweat, tears, and laaaaaaaaaaaate nights!
As always, I value everyone who has read any of my books for trusting me with your time, and reading my words. Everybody is so busy, so this means a lot.
Special thanks my family—especially my mum, who is always so willing to look after our kids, and free up valuable writing time, and Mr E, without whose coffee, I’d literally be dead!
Much love!

ABOUT MV ELLIS
MV ELLIS knows what it’s like to fall head over heels in love with a badass musician. She followed her heart halfway around the world to be with one. She moved from London to Sydney after a steamy holiday romance with a sexy bass player in sultry Brazil. Fourteen years, two children and a dog later, and she’s still smitten. All this with a guy she sat next to on a bus for 36 hours!
Ellis’s love of romance began when she was 11 years old, after a summer spent secretly reading her auntie’s books. She’s been a sucker for an alpha hero and strong heroine ever since.
Following a career spanning advertising, marketing, and social media, she finally wrote her debut novel, Catching London in 2017. She has since followed that with the Rough Ink series, and
MV loves to connect with readers. She can be reached on the following platforms:
