put a protective shield around the residence. No one will be entering and I ordered no one to leave without you or me with them.”
I nod my head at his words, then an unfiltered zap of energy filters through me. “Tell me what happened?” I demand as I walk around my office, the restless energy needing an outlet. My bear wants to hastily leave and protect his mate and cub, but the man, the sheriff of this town, needs to know everything so I can plan out my next move with precision. There can be no more surprises. We need to gain the upper hand, and this may be the key to us being able to do so.

Caspen stares at me, I’m sure because of the tone I used, but at this point, I don’t give a shit. Things are happening and have been happening since I arrived in town. “Well, tell me, Elder Caspen,” I command, stressing his title. He may be an elder on the council, but in this town, I’m top dog.
“When we arrived at your domicile, Glorianna asked your mate why she was at the window. Your mate stated she saw a shadow that disappeared in a burst of light,” he replies.
Well, that was clear as mud. “How did that lead you to assuming it was another elder, Caspen?” The memory of when I saw a shadow disappear crosses my mind and I wonder how long this shadow walker has been in my town. “Wait, before you tell me that, let me fill you in on why I now have cameras up surveilling everywhere that’s in the proximity of our home.” Quickly and succinctly I tell him what I saw that day as he nods.
“That would’ve been Alec,” he advises. “I suspected it was him based on what your mate advised she saw. I don’t like this,” he mutters. For the first time in my long life, I’m seeing him unsettled and considering that he’s known throughout the supernatural community as being confident, steadfast and focused, the fact that he’s pacing my office on Mystic Island is not a good sign.
“We need to find out why he has been shadowing my home. What if… fuck, Caspen, what if he and his mate are involved in this shit we’ve been trying to shut down?” I don’t even want to think that because it’s damn near treasonous, but Daphne’s reactions coupled with the fact that Alec was here sneaking around like he was has raised my suspicions.
“We’ll interrogate her once I get another member of the council here,” he coolly states. “We need three—you and I make up two of them.” At his explanation I nod because any time a supernatural is questioned in a formal capacity, they have a triumvirate in place; that is, three council members. I have no idea why three but knowing some of the magic that’s behind our kind, it likely has to do with that.
“Then make the call,” I demand. A whole entourage arrived, so surely, one of the others will be available. With all the fires in the air right now, I feel like we need to get at least one of them put out, but perhaps grilling Daphne will yield answers to some of the other shit that’s been going on.
While he makes his call, I step out to allow him privacy and pull out my own phone. I need to check on my mate, the insistence of my bear has my insides feeling raw and shredded. “Vaughn,” I say when she finally answers. Just her voice has my bear calming, allowing me to take in a deep breath.
“Trigger, what on earth is going on? Caspen said we can’t leave but Shyla was supposed to do some home visits today,” she states.
“Not one hundred percent sure, sweetheart,” I admit. “Caspen is here now, and he filled me in on what happened at the house.” Mindful that our call could be being monitored, I don’t elaborate not wanting to tip our hand just in case. “Y’all just stay put and have Shyla reschedule. I’m sure she won’t mind spending the day with Scar.”
She giggles causing my lips to tilt upward. Life has been crazy since I got here, but finding her, finding my mate, has made it bearable. Despite the uncertainty of the gem we found, the letter that was delivered to me, the veil, the shadow walker—Vaughn makes it easier. She’s just as busy as I am, probably more so
