that required signing.
Morgan reached across, chains dragging against the table’s edge, and closed it, shoving it aside. The fake friendliness, the warmth he’d had in his eyes when I’d entered the room vanished. “Tell Levi to leave. I want a proper visit with you. I want a proper conversation, or I won’t be signing anything.”
Levi must have sensed the spike of adrenaline that raised the hairs on my arms. His hand landed on the back of my neck, and his fingers massaged the muscles that had turned to iron. “That isn’t happening.” His tone was sharp as nails. “You visit Jason with me present, or you don’t visit at all. It’s not negotiable.”
Francis leaned in and whispered something in Morgan’s ear as Morgan watched the attention Levi lavished on my tight neck muscles. Morgan sneered and nodded before shoving Francis away. His dumb-fuck lawyer leaned back in his chair, arms crossed as he watched.
“Fine. Levi can stay. But Levi? I’ll kindly ask you to get your hands off my husband.”
Morgan’s gaze held something unnerving and hostile as he and Levi stared at one another. A battle of wills neither of them was willing to lose.
I shooed Levi away, not unkindly, and straightened in my seat. “This marriage is over, Morgan, whether you like it or not. I’m not your husband anymore, and Levi can touch me anyway he wants.”
Morgan laughed at that. It was cold and sent shivers up my spine. “That’s awfully ambitious thinking, Jason. You are a lot of things, but I never took you for a fool. Levi wouldn’t go near your dick if someone offered him a million dollars. Don’t think I haven’t observed him for years. He’s as straight as they come. Lucky for him too. It’s the only reason he’s still breathing.”
Francis touched Morgan’s arm and went to lean in to talk, but Morgan brushed him off. “Yeah, I know. It doesn’t fucking matter anymore, so lay off. I’ll say what I want.”
Morgan’s gaze dashed to the guard at the door and back. He studied Levi a moment, then returned all his attention to me. “This saddens me, baby.” He nodded at the folder with the divorce papers sitting in front of Levi. “I take my marriage vows very seriously, Jason. Very seriously. I thought you felt the same.”
“I did. I always did.”
“But you’d end it? Just like that? You’d walk away after all this time?”
“Yes. Our marriage was nothing more than a lie.”
Morgan quirked a brow. “A lie? Our marriage was the most honest thing there was. Our love transcends all barriers, Jason. This is just a small hiccup in the road. You’ll see. We can manage it too. Why would you want to ruin everything?”
“You’re delusional. I don’t love you anymore.”
Morgan tsked and held out his hands, palms up, waving his fingers to encourage me to take them. I didn’t move.
“Come on, baby. You aren’t afraid of me, are you?”
My skin felt alive with maggots. All I wanted was the papers to be signed so I could go home and never think about this again. Why was I here? Why was this happening?
“I want you to sign those papers. I did what you asked. I came. I’m here. Now please sign them.”
Levi opened the folder again. Morgan’s lawyer was the one to reach out and close it this time.
“After they’ve had what my client deems an appropriate visit,” Francis said, a note of iron in his tone, “then we will consider signing the papers. Stop interfering.”
“Okay, that’s enough. Jason—”
“It’s fine.”
It was not fine. It was anything but fine. I was shaking so badly on the inside I was afraid my internal organs would liquify.
“Come on. Please.” Morgan reached out farther.
“I don’t want to touch you. I want you to sign the papers and let this end.”
“I will, baby. Just give me this.”
I stared at his hands. Hands that had once known every part of my body. Hands that had once touched me tenderly and brought me pleasure.
Hands that had killed innocent people.
Swallowing more bile, I reached out and connected us, telling myself it would soon be over. Morgan’s hands were warm, while mine were cold and clammy. All I could think when he wrapped his fingers around mine was how much worse my nightmares were going to be after this.
“There you go. Was that so hard?” He stroked with his thumbs. Every feathering touch made my skin crawl.
“Now listen to me, baby. Listen carefully. The world is full of temptations, Jason. I’m
