into GHOST and demand they tell you what they know.” Harlow fell into her chair. “The government only likes to offer information when they have to.”
But wasn’t that the case? GHOST was in this for a reason. If they had the ability to end it on their own, wouldn’t they have done it already?
“That makes sense.” Mona chewed her lip for a minute, mulling over whether or not to share her suspicions with the rest of the women.
But suspicions alone weren’t really helpful, and it could take them down a rabbit hole they didn’t have time to explore.
But she did. Especially now that all her friends were paired off, happily spending their evenings snuggled up with the men who snatched them away.
Mona forced out a yawn, doing her best to make it seem authentic. “I think I might head out for the night too.” She gently closed her laptop and tucked it into her leather bag. “It’s been a long day.”
“Yeah it has.” Harlow grinned at her. “Wanna watch it one more time before you go?”
“I do not.” If she’d known everyone would witness her meeting with Zeke she might have done things differently.
Or not.
Lennie raised her hand. “I do.”
“He’s going to die when he finds out we all know you slapped him.” Harlow’s smile widened. “I think that’s my favorite part.”
She wasn’t wrong. Zeke would most likely never hear the end of it from the ladies of Intel. “I guess we’ll find out.” Mona grabbed her bag. “See you in the morning.”
The halls were oddly quiet as she made her way toward the front of the building. It felt later than it was, the darkness making it seem like it should almost be time to go to bed even though it was barely after seven.
To be fair, she’d been up since five, so bed probably wouldn’t be far off if there wasn’t something important to be accomplished.
Mona passed a few of the men temporarily camped out at headquarters. The place was packed to the gills with teams that were normally spread across the states, and it was all but impossible to find the kitchen in the rooming house unoccupied.
Currently, there were five men digging through the freshly-stocked fridge, putting together whatever they decided to eat for dinner.
Mona bypassed the kitchen and went straight to her room even though she was starving. Hopefully later it would be less populated and she could find something to eat in peace.
She needed to remember to give Elise a list of items to keep in her own kitchen. Unfortunately, her brain power was being used by about a million other things, and that list usually ended up being put off.
And it would probably happen again tonight.
After swiping her badge across the digital lock on the door to her room Mona went in, dropping her bag on the loveseat before kicking off her shoes as she headed to the small bedroom. After putting the shoes in their place, she dug out a set of thermal lounge pants and an oversized brushed-jersey sweater, along with a long-sleeved thermal t-shirt. She shivered as she stripped down and layered everything on, the chill of the room stealing the heat from her body. It was nearly impossible to get warm here.
Apparently unless she was wrapped in Pierce’s coat. The thing must be made of some sort of self-heating lining, because it kept her reasonably warm in spite of the blisteringly cold air outside. She’d almost hated to return it to his office on her way in this morning.
But only almost.
She’d just finished changing when someone knocked on her door.
Probably Eva. Her best friend saved Mona the trip to the kitchen more times than not, bringing over a plate of whatever amazing thing Brock made for dinner that night.
Mona hopped toward the door, pulling on a pair of thick socks as she went, her stomach growling at the prospect of delivered dinner.
“I am so glad you’re he—” The words died in her throat as she pulled open the door.
“I’m happy to hear that.” Pierce’s dark eyes skimmed down her in a slow sweep. “I wasn’t expecting this to be such a casual event.”
What in the hell was he talking about? “I’m sorry?”
“Our dinner plans.” Pierce stepped into her room, his overwhelming presence immediately sending her two steps back to clear his path. “Are you ready?”
Pierce was in her room.
Claiming they had dinner plans.
Mona shook her head, trying to clear of the thoughts running around her brain like there was a
