but you should really head home. I’ll be able to manage it from here. The last thing you should be doing while you’re pregnant is helping me move,” I complain, turning to her with a smile.
Kim is fiddling with a lampshade in the corner. “It’s fine. I’m fine. It’s not like you’re actually letting me do any heavy lifting. I want to make myself useful.”
“Well, you are very helpful. But go home to your family now.”
“You are part of my family, Blaire!” she says, and I force a smile on my face.
I know she knows how difficult this whole thing is for me. She knows I’m struggling to stay chirpy and bright. I don’t think I have fallen this hard for a man before, and neither has anyone disappointed me to this degree. I thought I was heartbroken over Stephen, but this is a whole new ballgame!
“And because I love you and care for you, I want you to do something for me, even though right now it feels like the last thing you want to do,” she continues.
I look up at her sharply. “What are you talking about?”
“Remember how you arranged a surprise meeting between Kirk and me? To sort out all the problems we were facing?”
I start standing up and dust off the knees of my jeans.
“But you and Kirk were in love. Kirk wasn’t treating you like garbage. You are having his baby.”
“But honey, I didn’t know that at the time. I didn’t know how he truly felt about me until you orchestrated that meeting between us and we got a chance to finally and honestly talk.”
“What have you done, Kim?” I groan at her.
She looks at the window, and I go over to it. When I look out, I see Trevor standing across the street, leaning against his car with his arms crossed over his chest. He’s looking up at my window, so our eyes meet.
He still has that effect on me. No matter how much I want to hate him, he still makes me melt. This is what makes him so damn dangerous.
“Kim!” I yell, turning to her, and she is already holding the door open.
“Please, Blaire. Do it for me. Do it for the closure. Just talk, and maybe then, you can move on in peace.”
Have his eyes ever looked this intense before? I can’t look away from him. He stands with his feet spread wide apart, his shoulders broad and strong. His biceps bulge and appear taut while he has his hands thrust into his pockets.
“Where is Anya?” I ask. It’s pretty late in the day so I know she’s back from school by now.
“I asked Michelle to come over and keep her company.”
“Your sister-in-law,” I murmur.
“Nicola and I were never married, but in essence, yeah, I guess she is.”
“I thought…”
“That I’m sleeping with her?” he interjects, and I can feel the back of my neck burning up.
“I didn’t know what else to make of the whole thing. I was confused, and you didn’t tell me anything.”
“I would have happily explained everything if you gave me a chance, Blaire. You kept running away from me.”
My throat feels so dry, I can barely speak. Kim asked me to come down and speak to him so I can gain some closure, but the more I’m in his presence, the more I feel like I’ll never get over him. If given a choice, I would never want to get over him.
“None of that matters anymore,” I reply.
“You’re right, none of it does.”
“So why are you here?”
“Your friend Kirk came to see me today. He brought the fury of his full legal team. I hear you want to break away from the contract. I was surprised to learn from Kim that you’re moving to this place.” He lifts his chin up towards the building behind me.
“Are you going to put up a fight? With the contract?”
“No, Blaire. I’ll let you go if that’s what you want to do. You don’t need to threaten me. You didn’t have to send your friend to do the dirty work.”
“The less we see of each other, the better it is for everybody,” I say. I force myself to look at my feet. It’s the only thing I can do apart from throwing myself at him.
“I just wanted to speak to you because I want to know what happened. It all seemed so sudden. I thought we were doing good. I know we had a rocky start but it felt like we
