I can’t wait for this baby to be born so I can shower it with all my love and affection.
At the same time, I can’t stop thinking about Trevor. Anya too.
Maybe Kirk is right about everything. Maybe I have fallen for Trevor in more ways than I’d anticipated. How did I let this happen? How have I let yet another man take advantage of me?
I’m like a vault. How did he manage to break through?
I’m trying my best to not dampen my own mood. Today is about Kim. It’s her special day, and I don’t want to ruin it by wallowing in self-pity.
Maybe I need a few more weeks…okay, maybe a few more months, and then Trevor will be just a distant memory.
I mean, people get over broken hearts all the time, don’t they? I was falling for him and he viewed me as no more than another one of his conquests. He got some free babysitting out of me in the process. Win-win.
“Excuse me, Ms. Crawford, but there’s a gentleman here to see you. He’s waiting at the reception desk.” The manager of the venue has appeared beside me. I barely hear his words clearly at first and when they register, my heart skips a beat.
Is it Trevor? What is he doing here? How did he even know to find me here? I’m almost tempted to ask the man to describe the person who wants to see me, but that would be unnecessary. Instead, I look around to make sure the party is going smoothly and I follow him back into the building.
But of course it’s not Trevor.
Stephen is standing at the reception desk, talking to a girl and making her giggle. He straightens up when he sees me and comes towards me.
We haven’t spoken since that night at the bar when Trevor punched him. That night I waited until Calvin pulled Trevor out, and after that, I left. I didn’t actually feel the need to stay with Stephen. It was just a nose bleed. He’d live.
I drove straight to Kim’s place and spent the night there. I didn’t want to return to my own apartment in fear of bumping into Trevor. When he punched Stephen, I’d felt a spark of a thrill. I’d seen the jealousy and fury in his eyes. I excited him. But why did he care if I was nothing more than a business partner with benefits?
I didn’t want to risk being alone with Trevor that night.
“I’ve been texting you, Blaire; where have you been?” Stephen asks.
“What are you doing here? How the hell did you find me?”
“I called your office and your assistant gave me the address.”
Seriously? What is wrong with Helen? I want to scream at the unprofessionalism and gross violation of my privacy.
“You shouldn’t be stalking me, Stephen!”
“I wouldn’t have to if you would pick up the phone when I call.”
“I don’t owe you anything,” I snap at him, and his brows furrow in surprise.
“I thought we were making progress, Blaire. I thought I was helping you see that we can be together this time. In every way.”
“I was being polite to you and allowing you the space to speak your mind freely; that doesn’t mean I was accepting your excuses or believing your promises.”
Stephen comes closer to me, and I glare right back at him. We are standing in the lobby of the resort; there are people around us, and they can hear if they want to eavesdrop.
“Is this about that guy? Your crazy-ass boss? Do you have something going on with him? I thought you did. Why else would he lose his shit on me?”
“This is about nothing else but you and me. It’s not going to work. Maybe I should apologize for leading you on.”
“You’re being stubborn, Blaire.”
I roll my eyes and turn to leave but he grabs my elbow tightly.
“Let go of me before I have you kicked out of this place.” I make sure to raise my voice just a little so that the people at the reception desk look up at us. Stephen has no choice but to drop his grip.
He rubs a hand over his face.
“I’m sorry, Blaire. I’m just desperate for some of your time, okay? Please, just tell me you’ll talk to me.”
“You must be Stephen!” It’s Kim. I spin around to see her standing behind me. She’s staring at Stephen with the calmest smile on her face. “And why are you crashing my baby shower?”
So, not only has Trevor had to stand
