me. I’m not sure what she’s thinking but I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s cursing me under her breath.
My only wish is that she loses whatever hopes and dreams she’s been harboring for me. Maybe this will teach her that she needs to drop that fantasy.
Maybe I should look for a new assistant.
At the same time, I don’t want to fire someone from their job just because of a silly little crush. Maybe if she’s able to get over it now, I don’t have anything to worry about in the future. Maybe this is just a minor speed bump in her career.
I hope it is, for her sake, because nothing good can ever come of being in a relationship with someone you work with.
And now I wish I would take my own advice and stay away from Blaire, but I’m already counting the minutes to when I’ll get to see her next.
Blaire looks flustered when she comes up to my office, barging in with her heels clicking on the floor.
“What is it this time, Trevor?” she asks, banging the door shut behind her.
I stand up and go towards her.
“What is going on with you?” I ask, and she tips her head back and looks up at the ceiling in exasperation. I can see she’s stressed about something.
“It’s something you can’t help me with. I just need to go back to my office and make a few phone calls. Do you actually have something to say?”
I place my hands on her shoulders and squeeze gently, and that seems to calm her, but only for a few moments. She’s trying to pull away from me immediately.
“Why don’t you tell me what’s going on and I’ll decide if I can help you or not.”
“It’s Lunar Inc.”
“The makeup company?”
“Yeah, I’m staffing their social media and marketing team. I’ve spent the last two weeks scouring the country to curate their perfect team, and I just got a call from somebody on their HR to say that they’re starting the hiring process themselves.”
“Why the fuck would they do that?”
“Because they want to get things rolling. They don’t have the kind of time we’re taking.”
“But it takes time to find the right match.”
“Exactly! We’ve interviewed literally thirty to forty people in the last two weeks. I wanted to do a good job.”
Blaire searches my eyes like she’s hoping I have the right answer for her.
“I know the CFO of Lunar Inc.”
“Are you serious?” she exclaims.
“I’m going to have a word with her.”
“You don’t have to…” she begins to protest, and I give her shoulders another squeeze.
“I have to because your success matters monetarily to me. Don’t worry, I’m not trying to do you a favor,” I say, and finally, a smile breaks out on her face.
“And I thought you were just calling me over to push my buttons,” she says as I hook a finger under her chin.
“Opening your buttons is more what I had in mind.”
She leans towards me, and I kiss her parted lips. Finally, she wraps her arms around my neck, and our bodies merge. This is exactly what I wanted. Exactly how I wanted to feel today.
I want to tell her I’ve missed her, that I was sad to leave her apartment this morning, but I don’t know what the right words are.
Blaire gently pulls away from me and moves my hands away from her shoulders.
“We don’t have time for this, Trevor. You need to make some calls and I have a meeting across town.”
I let her go without protest and watch in admiration as she walks to my door and throws me a look.
“This can’t turn into a habit. It would be a very bad habit,” she says before she leaves, but I catch the smile on her face.

Blaire
I see Erica at her desk the moment I step out of Trevor’s office. She looks up at me with her lips pursed and an expression on her face that tells me she has something to say.
I offer her a faint smile as I walk past her desk but she stands up abruptly. That stops me in my tracks.
“I hope you had a productive meeting with Mr. Davenport,” she says politely, but I can feel the sharpness of her words.
“I guess you could say it was. Erica, I want to know if there’s something you want to tell me. Something on your mind?”
She looks away, and her eyes dart to Trevor’s door. She looks nervous, almost afraid, and her behavior reminds me of that
