heading for the door. "My shift is over and I have to get some rest. I suggest you do the same."
She left and after a few minutes Evans, Cathy and Bill's kids, Sam and Patrick came in. His daughter gave him a very gentle hug and they all gathered by his bed.
"It's all right. I'm fine."
"It's not all right," his daughter said. "You could have died."
"I didn't, though." He looked at Evans and Cathy and asked, "Can you tell me what happened? Last I remember I was chasing Bethany."
"Dr. Nelson tried to run you down, and Cliff shot him. We knew we weren't going to make it in time and told him where you were. As luck would have it, he happened to be in the right place at the right time."
"Cliff was here, but he kept falling asleep and his snoring was disturbing the waiting room. We told him to go home and get some rest," added Cathy.
"Is Dr. Nelson still alive? We need him for the case."
"It's not clear if he'll make it. He took a few shots in the chest. Last we were told, he's still in surgery," said Cathy. "But with the files Cliff found at Andrew Livingston's place, I don't think we'll be needing much else for the case."
Patrick changed the subject away from work. "Hey, what did you say to that doctor that came and got us? She looked a little flustered. She was all red," his son said.
Evans laughed, "She should have been red with anger. She was the one who fixed up your Dad this morning, before he decided to go wrestling cars."
"No. I don't think she was angry," said his daughter Sam.
"Never you mind," said Bill.
"That's just what you need," said Sam, turning to the others. "Most people would be happy with someone who could cook, clean, fix a car, something like that. Dad on the other hand, goes for someone he could really use -- an emergency doctor."
They all laughed as Bill smirked. "Don't you people have work to do?" he asked, trying to change the subject.
"I don't think we should leave you alone. You're either going to try and take off, or start hitting on the staff. I think you need a chaperone," said Cathy.
Bill was starting to fade. His eyelids started dropping. His daughter noticed it first. "We'll let you rest," she said.
As they were getting up to leave, Evans reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out Bill's sunglasses. He walked over to Bill's bed, and put them on his side table and said, "I was half tempted to help these disappear, but I knew you'd be disappointed if you lost them. I found them at the cafe when I was questioning the witnesses."
Bill smiled when he saw his blue sunglasses again. He looked over to his daughter, who also lit up when she saw them. "Thanks," he said to Evans.
"Thanks for coming, everyone," he said as his friends and family left.
He wished he could get up and leave with them, but he was incredibly tired and knew he had to sleep. Besides, there was someone he was kind of hoping he might see again when he woke up.
Chapter 69
Two weeks later
Bill Roberts
Bill sat at a table, waiting. When the guard brought Sarah in, she looked happy to see him. She came over and sat across from him.
"Did you hear back from the District Attorney?" she asked. She was almost bouncing up and down in her seat.
The police had enough evidence that Dr. Nelson, had been controlling the minds of his victims, using advanced medications in conjunction with hypnosis. There were mixtures of his concoctions found in the wreckage of his car that helped put the picture together. Once they figured it out, Bill started working to get the charges dropped for Sarah. They never could find a motive, and it wasn't right that she pay for a crime she really wasn't responsible for.
"The D.A. said that as long as you pass the psychological assessments to prove you are of sound mind, you'll be getting out soon," said Bill.
"They moved me to this hospital yesterday, saying I'd be having some tests. The nurse just told me I have an interview in a few minutes. Nobody would tell me what it's about. Do you think that's what's going on?"
"I'm not sure. I was informed this morning that it would be arranged soon."
"It sounds risky. What if they don't find me of sound mind?"
"With all the meetings you and
