thing before I go. Did Andrew have a home office, by any chance? Possibly a safe or lock box?"
"We have an office upstairs he used in the evenings and on weekends when he brought work home. We have a safe in there. Why do you ask?"
"Mrs. Livingston, the information we've been collecting is pointing to a much larger situation than this appears. Anything we could find may help provide answers to why your husband took his life, and possibly to what forces were behind it. Would it be all right with you, if I came over and went through his office together with you? With any luck, there may be something helpful there."
"Uhh, I guess so. I don't really want my kids home though. This has been awful for them. My sister is coming to pick me up in a couple of hours, and we're driving to Kingston to officially identify Andrew's body. Can we do it tomorrow?"
"Are the kids home now?" he asked.
"My parents have them at their place. They're going to watch them until I get back."
"I really don't want to intrude on what is sure to be a difficult day, but if there is anything that can help us in this case, it may be very urgent that I find it as soon as possible. We have reason to believe that one of the people involved in this situation may not be in Toronto long."
"If you can make it soon, we can have a quick look before I have to leave. But I should be on the road in two hours at the latest."
"I'll be there in twenty minutes," Cliff said.
Chapter 53
Bill Roberts
Bill had been talking to Sarah Elliot about the training she had been doing, about the other women she was training with, and how she really didn't know much about Natalia. She described the last encounter she had with her husband, and how it had been a normal morning, with no reason to be upset.
The night before, they had been out to dinner with friends and had a good time. She provided names so he could verify, although he had no doubt that she was telling the truth. With years of questioning people, he could usually tell if they were hiding something. She seemed shaken up about what had happened, but didn't seem to be hiding anything that might help provide answers.
Bill's cell phone beeped and he saw he had a text from Cliff.
Cliff: Livingston was seeing our doctor. Meeting with wife to search home office. On my way there now.
He put his phone away.
"Getting back to Dr. Nelson -- can you tell me what kind of sessions you were having?" Bill asked.
"We would discuss things like barriers to training and pushing myself during a race. Also fears of injury and concerns about taking time away from being at home. The usual things people weigh out when committing to a goal like this," she said.
"What sort of techniques did he use to help you deal with these issues? Was it question-and-answer, or did you talk, he listen sort of thing?"
"I talked, he mainly listened but asked questions to direct me to re-examine things in different ways. Then we did relaxation techniques. Sometimes he used hypnosis."
"He used what?"
"He would hypnotize me. I would never get too deep. Dr. Nelson said I didn't hypnotize well. It helped relax me so I could de-stress."
"I don't know much about hypnotism. Don't some hypnotists make you dance like a chicken up on stage, in front of an audience?"
"It's not like that. I could always remember everything. Dr. Nelson said that mind control only happened in the movies."
Only in the movies, my ass.
Bill thanked her for helping and told her he'd be in touch. On his way out, he asked who her lawyer was. When she told him, he felt relieved to hear it was one of the better ones in the city. He left the room, pulled out his cell phone, and placed a call.
"Evans, I'd like you to go bring in Dr. Nelson. Bring a few uniformed cops with you just in case."
Chapter 54
Bill Roberts
Bill was on his way back to the elevator, when he heard something that stopped him in his tracks.
"Where the hell have you been, Roberts?" came a voice behind him.
Shit! The Chief.
"I've been calling your office. Apparently, nobody can get a hold of you. That's bullshit if you ask me."
"I was on my way upstairs. I haven't got my messages yet," Bill said.
"More bullshit. I
