coffee table. They sat on the floor and devoured their food while watching cartoons together.
“Are you going to work today?” Rain asked after drinking the last of his milk.
“I thought we’d spend the day together.”
“But what about school?” Rain frowned.
“If you’d rather study than spend the day with me, I’ll drive you over to Frey’s.”
His son’s eyebrows dipped as he decided. It was cute watching Rain contemplate studying or playing hooky. “Well,” Rain drawled, exaggerating the L, “I guess one day won’t hurt.”
Remy chuckled. “You’re a smart boy, and Marigold will catch you up tomorrow, I’m sure. What would you like to do?”
“Do we have any grapes?”
“Grapes? No, but we can get some at the store. Are you still hungry?”
“No, I want to smash them.”
“You remember doing that?” The Durands now had machines which did the job on certain types of their wines, but some varieties were still mashed with feet. Rain had joined his parents several times in “smashing.”
“Yeah. That was fun.” Rain hadn’t had a lot of fun in his life lately, but the more time he spent with Amelia and Connor, the better his little life was becoming.
“I don’t know of any local wineries, but I’ll check around.” Remy stood and went to his bedroom for his phone. He’d plugged it up to charge while in the shower. He had a missed call from Henry as well as a voicemail. Remy tapped the screen to listen.
“Remy, this is Henry. I found Nash Hogan. He’s been living in Amsterdam for the last year under the name of Nash Visser. With his family’s fortune, he was able to create a new identity. I’m sending you his address in an email. Please let me know if I can help further.” Remy shook with a mixture of rage and excitement. He was going to make his mate’s brother pay for what he did to Rain. But before he did that, he would find out exactly what happened to Isla.
Remembering the reason he had gone to retrieve his phone, Remy calmed himself, then went back downstairs. He sat down on the sofa, his leg resting against Rain’s shoulder where he sat on the floor. The boy ached for his father’s touch, and Remy never failed to give it to him often, even in simple ways. Rain needed stability, something Remy wasn’t capable of giving his son at the moment. Remy was supposed to return to California in a few months, taking Rain away from his new friends. Remy wasn’t as close to the Gargoyles out west. None of the ones he hung around with had small children. That didn’t mean there weren’t any.
Remy’s home in California was just as bland and unwelcoming as the one he was currently renting. The houses were nice enough, but Remy had yet to add any personal touches to either. Rain’s bedroom had been set up by some of the mates, and it was filled with all types of things a kid could want. All their family photos were packed away. When Remy moved from France, he didn’t bother taking the reminders of Isla and Rain out of their boxes. The memories hurt bad enough without staring at their shining smiles day after day. In the months since his rescue, Rain had yet to mention his mum. The psychiatrist said he would when the time was right, and Remy didn’t want to push, especially when he didn’t have all the answers as to what happened to Isla.
As badly as he wanted to hop a plane to The Netherlands, Remy didn’t want to leave Rain again so soon after having gone after Craven. That had only taken one day whereas going to confront Nash would take much longer. Remy could take Rain with him, but only if he had others to go with him and watch over the boy. He could ask Gregor and Tessa, but he didn’t want to ask Deacon to fill in for him again. If Tamian’s mate wasn’t working with Jonas on a project, Remy would love to have the couple accompany him. Tamian was a strong Goyle, and Lucy was a Gryphon. That wasn’t common knowledge, but Tamian had confided in Remy on the flight to New Mobile. It was fascinating learning about another type of shifter, especially ones who could transform into both their Lion and Eagle separately. When Tamian described the massive Gryphon he’d fought when he rescued Lucy, Remy was curious to see one for himself.
