working perfectly. Having a slightly less powerful device in every corner of the room was a great idea. Although we never got to test it, you can see it’s quite effective.”
My heart quickens with the realization that Jaxtyn feels close. It’s the oddest sensation … almost like being excited to see someone. For the first time since we were separated by Einar, I’m hopeful.
“He’s here,” I hiss. Everyone huddled around me nods as the Taxin holding the tablet begins talking to the armed Taxin in line. He glances up at a set of double doors and nods.
“Now!”
The first two Taxin throw open the doors falling into the room spaced out perfectly while we all watch.
“Step aside for the D-pierce! D-freeze is holding!” The tablet-wielding Taxin announces. “Ready the D-pierce …”
Purlogh has moved away, looking over the Taxin’s shoulder at his tablet as he hovers in the gateway. “Uh, everyone … you have to see this.”
The guys beat me to surrounding the Taxin, but I can hear them perfectly. What they’re saying doesn’t matter though, because once I get a look into the room that all the Taxin ran into, my attention is redirected. “No, guys!” I glance back at them as they talk about what the doctor is doing. Right at this moment I don’t give a flying fuck because looking into the long corridor with cell after cell lining each side, I can see that the strange green glow is illuminating all the Sinth guardians—and their mates—not only making them visible to the Taxin, but from the horrified expression on Lilibeth who’s closest to me, unable to move too!
“Oh, fuck!” The expletive comes from the smaller Taxin watching the demonstration on the tablet, and the outburst has me glancing back. They’re staring right at me where I’m hovering in my dimension’s gateway.
“She’s illuminated by the green light,” one of Purlogh’s buddies comments right as Purlogh snatches the tablet and phases completely in to wrap his arms around the doctor. There’s a brief snap in the air as he phases him to our gateway and renders him to dust.
One of the other Sinth does the same to the Taxin’s companion as Purlogh studies the tablet. “Hold everyone. Not yet …” Pushing a few things on the device, my ears feel the pressure change in the air as the green light behind me starts powering down. “Alright now! Keep in mind, those tubes on their shoulder can expose and freeze you just like the green light.”
Every man I came with disappears, and it takes me a moment to realize they’ve already moved into the room. Spinning around, there are gurgled screams from Taxin as gray clouds begin to fill the air. Everything is happening so fast!
Running down the center aisle, I search the cages for Jaxtyn. “Jaxtyn!” My voice is breathless as I notice that some of the cages are empty, while others contain naked humans.
“He’s here!” Lilibeth is already in front of me, pointing into one of the farthest cages. I’m there instantly, looking in to see him slumped on the ground, a green flashing device stuck in his back.
Nikon is already hunched over him, pulling it out with a jerk. “I’ll be back,” he murmurs, more to Lilibeth than me as he phases away.
Falling to my knees, I try and roll him over, but I don’t get anywhere until Lilibeth helps me. “He’s going to be fine. That disc in his back is called a Pinner. They put them there to keep us from phasing. I’m going to go help, but just sit with him until he comes around.”
Nodding, I keep my eyes on Jaxtyn’s face even as the sound of breaking glass explodes around me. I’m not sure what they’re doing, but the naked humans in this cell don’t move either. “Jaxtyn … Jaxtyn.” Slapping his cheeks lightly, I let out a sigh of relief when his eyelids begin to flutter open.
Jaxtyn’s arms circle my waist and drag me on top of him, and I realize what he intends. Pulling me down, I melt into his embrace, so thankful to feel his strong arms around me. Phasing us into our dimension, I let the bed materialize under us as our lips meet, the spark of attraction and recognition shooting through my nerves.
His tongue thrusts into my mouth as he moans and pulls back much too soon in order to ask, “Is it really you?” As he brushes my hair away from my face, I nod, tears welling up
