smirked, nodding in my direction. “You know where to find me,” he repeated, then strode to the other side of the bar to get one of the other bartenders’ attention.
Was he really going to ignore me? Then I remembered the way he’d made me beg him to fuck me.
You know where to find me.
He wanted me to beg again while he walked around like I hadn’t given him the one thing I’d never given to anyone else? I was half-furious, half-turned-on by the way he ignored me. I fought the urge to go after him and demand to be seen.
“Hey, so you were saying…”
I tuned out the bartender and watched August walk back to his table. I stared in disbelief at the woman he was with. She was gorgeous, and even from across the room, I could see the way she lit up when August returned. She crossed her legs, which hiked up her already short dress riding up firm thighs.
“If you’d rather someone who looks like he’s already chosen for the night, that’s fine,” the bartender muttered, then stalked off.
I couldn’t summon the energy to care. My mission to get laid, well and truly pounded tonight until my discontent fled, disappeared. I couldn’t stop staring at August and his date, the way they talked and laughed. He didn’t even once look over to where I was.
Now I knew how the women I’d slept with felt. August had definitely not given me any promises. How could he? We could have nothing but two steamy nights, but why did I crave more? I wanted to be the one sitting across from him, basking in his attention. I already knew he had a way of listening to you talk that made you feel like the center of his world.
That was what I’d felt when we had sex. That I was the sun and he revolved around me. He completed in an hour what the earth did in twenty-four.
I tore my gaze away from them, the hunt completely ruined. I downed my drink, the warmth from the alcohol doing nothing to stop the knotting in my stomach.
I lost track of how long I was at the bar. At some point, I’d switched to shots, but I couldn’t exactly count how many I’d had.
A hand came down on mine before I could take my next drink. I didn’t need to look up to know who he was. Even with the musky odor of the bar, his familiar smell was unmistakable.
What the fuck had he done to me?
“I think that’s enough,” he said, his lips close to my ear.
“You’re—” I swung around in my seat but lost my balance. The room swam before me, and I would’ve probably careened to the ground if he hadn’t moved swiftly and caught me.
August pulled me up against him, his arms around me steady and strong. “Easy there. How much did you have to drink?”
God, why did it feel so right in his arms? “Not enough.” At least that was what I thought I said as I swiped my hand to grasp the shot glass from the counter. I ended up hitting it over, and the glass rolled off and crashed to the floor.
“In case I didn’t make it clear to you, Charles. That’s enough.”
I snickered at him and pointed a finger in his chest. “You go back to your date. Me? I’m just getting started.”
“God, if you were sober right now, I’d flog you so hard until you admit why you’re really upset.”
“You can flog me all you want.” In fact, in my alcohol-induced brain, it sounded hot as hell. “As long as you fuck me after.”
His arms tightened around me. I smirked up at him. Why did he look even hotter through my drunken haze? I blinked. My right contact lens must’ve slipped out while I was drinking.
Had I swallowed it?
I giggled, then promptly shut my mouth at the unmanly sound.
“You’re completely wasted,” August murmured. “Lean on me.”
I leaned on him, my head falling onto his shoulder. I nuzzled his neck. Why did he feel so good?
“Where’s your girlfriend?” I asked as he fished money out of his wallet and paid for my drinks. If I’d drunk as much as I thought, I must’ve racked up a huge bill. I should probably pay, but I couldn’t even reach my wallet.
Served him right for coming here with someone else.
“I don’t have a girlfriend. You know that.”
“Was that a hooker, then?”
“Just a friend, Charles. Just a friend.”
I scoffed but
