lash into me—her and me hunting in the woods for our meals, us crying after we lost our parents when we thought Jae wasn’t watching, how Kaira would fix my hair before I attended the pack meetings and even my mating night with Martell.
But now, her overly-sweet voice makes me sick.
I hear Crius muttering things to Ragnar, but I’m too distracted to pay attention.
“Careful,” Stone whispers from my right, while Nikos takes a step forward, expecting the worst.
I search my sister’s face for anything familiar, for a sliver of who she used to be. “Kaira, what happened to you?” I murmur, my voice breaking.
“Stop wasting time, sister,” she presses, pausing several feet in front of me. This close, she looks older, like she’s aged so much in such a short time. “You must bring Jae here too. It’s safer than out there. I convinced Lyra to spare your wolves… for now. And she has another offer for you.”
“Why are you acting this way?” I ask, my knees buckling at the heartbreak shattering me.
“Listen well, Narah.” And that’s when I catch a slight tremble in her voice, the giveaway that something so much deeper is going on here, that she may have her hands twisted to follow Lyra’s instructions. Behind her, the Grand High Witch waits like a hungry lion, waiting to pounce.
“Maybe there’s a way to make you understand why you belong here and not with the wolves. Why you chose the wrong side, sister, and if you don’t open your eyes this very moment, you will lose so much.”
Her words ring in my ears… there’s something so familiar about them, like I’ve heard them before.
My fingers curl into fists, Ragnar’s presence against my side a reminder that I’m not alone in this… except does he really care about Kaira or just gaining the witches’ approval of his leadership over the sector?
I shudder, and that’s when Kaira’s words return like a storm from the vision I had, the one where she had face paintings and said those exact words to me.
You chose the wrong side, sister.
I’m shaking my head, and all warmth has slipped from my body, my heart pounding in my ears. The same devastating feelings fill me as they had in the vision where Kaira wasn’t herself, where she had her own agenda, and where she sacrificed Jae by distracting me.
I back away, the nightmare playing out on my mind flooding me with a darkness that tilts the world on its side. Something is broken with this picture, and unease twists my insides.
“What’s your offer,” Ragnar states, but I pull hard on his hand.
“We need to leave. Now.” The words tear free from my lips as a chill races up my spine, because suddenly I don’t trust Kaira. This isn’t my sister, it can't be. If my vision is any indication of what’s coming, then I can’t trust Kaira.
“Our mother is still alive, Narah,” Kaira says, then smiles. Her words bring me to an abrupt halt. If I thought that finding Kaira alive rattled me, her new revelation punches me in the solar plexus. I can’t breathe.
“What did you just say?”
“Our mother is the reason we lost Father, why you were rejected from the Storm Wolves’ pack, and why you will always be hunted down for what you are. She is the reason why those in this coven hide in the woods. She left you, me, and Jae at the mercy of the wolves, knowing we’d end up dead under those savages, which is what she hoped for. So what do you think she’ll do to us when she discovers we are free from the pack?”
My head swims, my vision darkening in patches. Nausea billows in my belly. This is too much.
Tears sting my eyes at her suggestion that our mother wanted us dead, that her fake death somehow caused our father’s. Ragnar holds me upright. I would have fallen over if it wasn’t for him.
“Narah, listen to me,” Kaira continues. “You and Jae are in danger out there. Bring her here with us. And whatever you do, never let Mother find you.”
