him involved a summoning or a curse. God, I didn’t know, but I had to find out. I had only spent a short time with him, but I wasn’t ready to just watch him vanish as though he never existed.
Dawn broke as we walked through the huge open room toward the door. Orion ducked behind a support pillar, covering his skin. Logan and I glanced around at the corpses of the fallen as they turned to ash, slowly at first as the sunlight found them through the windows and door, and then rapidly. A hard breeze swept through the broken windows and bore most of the ashes away.
Orion reemerged, now safely obscured by remaining in the shadows, his hood over his head, his body covered.
“What’s next?” I wondered out loud. In the wake of this massive destruction, the investigation I had taken on was a favor to an old friend and seemed too large to truly comprehend. We were standing at the tip of an iceberg whose shadow loomed deep underwater. There was something strange and mystical about this untamed northern city, this frozen, lonely place. A killer taking out innocents that I couldn’t help but think was not vampire or shifter related. Then there was the warring battle between the Seattle clanmaster and Orion.
With Seth gone, I had to find him. As crazy as it sounded, that ache in my chest from seeing him vanish deepened. What the hell happened to him?
Which brought me to my final dilemma…my attraction to these men. Somewhere along the way, the whole slayer and monsters being enemies had turned on its head. I had to correct that.
“The word will travel fast that the Seattle detachment is dead,” Orion answered solemnly. “We will need to prepare for the worst—all of us. Because when it reaches home…” He turned his gaze to me, staring defiantly. “A storm is coming.”
Yet my thoughts kept swinging back to the odd energy I’d sensed at the gruesome scene of all those butchered humans. Something was really wrong here beyond all the other shit. A darkness slid through the shadows undetected in Anchorage, and everything was about to get a whole lot worse very soon if I didn’t find out who was hunting humans.
I had come to Anchorage to stop a war amid vampires. But instead, I found myself dragged into a battle zone.
And I had no plans to walk away.

Prologue
Meira
The creak of the door alerts me to someone entering my room.
“Mama?” I roll over in bed expectedly.
But it’s Jaine, our neighbor. She rushes to me with wild hazel eyes and messy blonde hair, still in her blue nightgown with patches. Her face is pale, her breaths shallow and raspy. I remember the blood and tears drenching her cheeks when she first came to our settlement after the Shadow Monsters killed her family. It still scares me to remember the fear on her face…
