Chapter 49

Kayleigh

“Fuck Bodie, that was hot,” Karma said, as she shut the door.

Major burst out laughing and Bodie smiled. I think they were learning that you never quite knew what Karma was going to say.

“Are you okay?” Major asked me.

“Yeah, I’m fine. Would you really have fought him?”

“Fuck yes I would have. He needs to be put in his place. He’s dangerous now, like a cornered animal so until he’s kicked out I’m your shadow.”

“What do you mean?”

“Where you go, I go.”

“I’m not sure that’s necessary. And besides, you have classes to go to,” I told him.

“This isn’t negotiable Kayleigh. I don’t trust that fucker as far as I can throw him, so that means you’re stuck with me for a while.”

I nodded and that seemed to satisfy him. The truth was that Wes had scared me in the hallway and having Major with me made me feel safer. And if I was being really honest with myself, I was still thinking about what almost happened in the truck and really wanted to finish what he started.

The four of us settled in and watched a movie. When it was over Major got up and went to the door with Bodie.

“I’ll be right back,” he told me. “Do not open this door to anyone but me or Bodie.”

We agreed and locked the door behind them.

“Who knew that coming to college would make little ol’ Kayleigh Mills the center of a controversy,” Karma said to me.

“Whatever. Don’t forget that no one actually knows what’s going on.”

“Fine. I’ll change the subject. How hot was it to watch the guys get all defendy in the hallway?”

“Defendy? Really?”

“Yes really. Come on Kayleigh, don’t avoid my question.”

“Maybe it could have been hot but I was kind of scared of Wes. I was relieved when Major said he was going to be my shadow. I may be good at self-defense, but I don’t think that would help very much against an angry Wes. He’s pretty big and athletic. I’d rather not have to test my skills against him.”

“I hadn’t even thought about that. I’m sorry.”

“It’s ok. It’s still hard to believe that he seemed like such a nice guy and then we see what he’s really like. It’s amazing that people can act so different from who they really are. Do you think that Major and Bodie did the right thing?” I asked.

“You bet your ass I do. After seeing the pictures he had it was only a matter of time before he acted on them. It’s not safe to have him here.”

“Is he safe anywhere?”

“Maybe this is his opportunity to get help,” Karma said.

“Making someone get help doesn’t mean they will actually change.”

“I know, but maybe this is a wakeup call. Why do you care what happens to him anyway?”

“Major asked me the same thing. I don’t know. I guess I knew the good part of him and that’s what I still think of.”

“You have always seen the good in people, well except when it came to Major.” Karma grinned at me.

“Does it count that I see the good in him now?”

“Sure, that totally counts,” Karma said very sarcastically.

“Whatever,” I said, laughing and threw a pillow at her.

She threw it back and then launched herself at me. I knew she was going to try to tickle me. It was something she’d done since we were kids. I managed to block her attempts for a minute or so, but one of her hands found its way to my side. I was extremely ticklish on my sides and started screaming and laughing at the same time. We heard banging on the door and that stopped both of us.

“Kayleigh, let me in,” someone yelled from the other side of the door.

Karma went and looked through the peephole and opened the door. It was Major.

“Is everything okay in here?” he asked, with a very serious face.

Karma and I both burst out laughing. I finally managed to tell him we were just fine.

“Sorry for scaring you,” I told him. “I think Karma was trying to distract me.”

“You started it,” she said.

“Maybe I did, maybe I didn’t.”

Major was just shaking his head at us. People did that a lot so we were used to it.

“Whatcha got there?” I asked him, pointing to the two bags he had with him.

“Just some clothes for tomorrow and a few books.”

“Oh,” I said feeling my cheeks heat up.

I know Major noticed but surprisingly didn’t say anything. I could also tell that Karma was trying to hold
