talked about the social clubs made them sound ominous. Functioning outside the rules of the school sounded lawless.
Lucas continued. “There are eight social clubs: four just for guys; three just for girls and one co-ed.
I’m in one. It’s called The Geek Patrol.” He was blushing a bit. “It’s just a bunch of engineers and IT
guys. We drink a lot of beer and play video games, many of which we design and build ourselves, but that’s not relevant to this particular story.”
His nerdiness made me smile. He wasn’t a complete geek; he had just a little geekiness around the edges. He was a decent guy, though. I imagined my dad was probably a lot like him when he was young.
“Anyway, the most popular guys on campus, like Evan and Aaron, all vie for spots in The Clubhouse.
They all come from extremely wealthy families and most of them look like they just stepped out of GQ. “
So far, Lucas hadn’t told me anything that made Aaron less appealing. Then he dropped the bombshell. “One night, during our sophomore year, Ian came home totally smashed. He was rambling incoherently for the most part. Then he got serious and told me some stuff about The Clubhouse he had heard as part of his initiation rituals. Because the guys are all from families that belong to exclusive and private golf clubs, they call their society The Clubhouse and everything about it is related to golf.”
I remembered the matching polo shirts that Evan and Aaron were wearing with the golf club insignia.
“Apparently, when the guys are seniors they have a tournament. The first ‘round’ is in fall semester and the second ‘round’ is in the spring. Every week of the term is a ‘hole’ and the 16 week term plus orientation week and exam week make up a complete round. In the spring, the extra weeks are Spring Break and final exam week. Each of the 16 seniors puts $5000 into a pot at the beginning of senior year.
By the end of senior year, the guy with the most points wins a brand new $80,000 luxury car, which they buy with the winnings.”
At this point in the story, Lucas met my eyes and his expression turned even grimmer. “Do you want to know how they accumulate points to win?”
I wasn’t sure I wanted to know but I nodded anyway.
“They get points for every freshman girl they have sex with.”
I could feel my face drop and my stomach tightened. It was suddenly clear why Evan and Aaron had been so nice to me.
Lucas continued. “They get more points when they have sex at The Clubhouse, where they make the girls sign in as guests. They even time stamp it. Ian told me they have scores for a variety of things, like being with two girls at once, which they call a double birdie. Or if they can get a girl to have sex with them in less than an hour, it’s a hole in one. They score the most points, though, if they are able to get a girl’s V-Card.”
At that point, I thought I saw Olivia raise an eyebrow at me. Was it that obvious I was still a virgin?
Did I have some kind of sign on my head? I wondered if that’s why Evan and Aaron had been so overly attentive because apparently I was worth extra points. I started to fume.
“There are other, more crass criteria for earning points, which I’m even embarrassed to mention,” he added. I could see now how uncomfortable the whole thing made him. “I really thought I knew Ian but when I asked him if that’s the type of thing he wanted to participate in he seemed genuinely enthusiastic about the idea. I found it appalling and completely degrading. After that, Ian and I drifted apart. It was difficult to look at him in the same way knowing he supported that type of behavior.”
I felt sick to my stomach. I couldn’t believe I had flirted with Aaron, even if it was ineptly. How easy would it have been for me to fall right into his trap?
Olivia jumped up from her bed and pulled me up from mine. “Now you know why I was so adamant about them not helping you with your stuff. I don’t want you to be a notch on one of their score cards.”
“Thank you,” I said feeling like such a fool.
Olivia smiled. “No prob. That’s what roommates are for. Now, I think the two of
