be one of my favorite memories.
Logan loved me.
Jakey said my name.
Epilogue
Logan
“Okay, buddy, this is it,” I said to Jake, who’d made us stop calling him Jakey at kindergarten orientation, but would always be Jakey to me.
“Dad, I’m fine. You’re the one freaking out.” He turned to Creed as he hooked a thumb in my direction with a roll of those blue orbs that reminded me more of my cousin the older he got.
Creed nudged Jake’s foot with his own. “Hey, this is a big deal for us. It’s your first day of kindergarten, and you won’t even let us drop you off.”
Always the practical one, Jake said, “That’s what the bus is for.”
The bus came into view, and I forced myself to keep my arms at my side. The last thing I wanted to do was embarrass my kid on his first day of school.
Thankfully, he threw his arms around Creed’s legs for a quick hug, and my husband stroked his hand over the hair of the little boy who owned his heart. “Make lots of friends, and we’ll be here when you get home.”
I glanced at him, wondering if he planned to take a half-day, but I’d ask him once Jake left. I hunched down, relaxing my forearms on my thighs, and sucked in a harsh breath when Jake flung himself at me with tears in his eyes. I wrapped him in my arms and picked him up, squeezing him tight as I walked him to the open door of the bus. “You're going to do great,” I whispered in his ear. “Do you believe me?” He nodded his head against my shoulder.
I kissed his cheek and set him down on the first step into the bus. He smiled tremulously. “Bye, Dad.”
“Have a good day.”
Creed stepped up beside me. “Remember to have fun, Jake,” he said.
Jake nodded. “Okay, Pops. I will.”
He turned and said, “Good morning,” to the bus driver, who returned in kind.
“I’ll take care of him,” the man said to us after Jake sat down. Then he shut the door and pulled out onto the road.
Creed and I stood side by side, waving as the bus drove away. There was a pain in my chest that J.J. and Haley had missed this time in their son’s life, but if they were watching out for us from somewhere, they knew what a wonderful life we had created. The first year Creed and I had been together was like a dream come true in many ways, but it had been tough as well. As time had gone by, Jakey’s words had returned gradually, and then came the vocalization of his grief. Where he’d been so mild-mannered after his parents’ death, he became angry, and he’d taken a lot of his frustration out on Creed. My man had handled it like a champ and had continued to smother our boy in love. But one day, Conrad had taken him out. He said he wanted to talk to Jakey about grief. I’d known Conrad had lost a boyfriend in an accident before I met him, and I didn’t know what he’d said to Jakey, but things had changed after that. The genuine bond he’d begun with Creed in the beginning strengthened, and I’d gotten my sweet boy back.
“What are you thinking about?” Creed asked, wrapping his muscular arm tightly around my waist.
“Our life,” I responded, finally dropping my arm as the bus rolled out of sight.
“Me too. I was thinking about the day he told us he’d always loved his parents, but asked if he could call us Dad and Pops.”
I leaned into Creed, smiling as I remembered that night. Jakey had known I was going to propose to Creed, so he’d waited until after he’d said yes, and then made his own proposal. It had just been the three of us at bedtime. The moment couldn't have been more perfect. We’d worried a little that he’d didn’t quite understand what he was saying, but we saw the counselor once a month now, and he’d assured me the only thing abnormal about it was how clearly Jakey stated his emotional needs for a child his age.
With a sigh, I straightened. “You better go get ready for work. You’re already late.”
Creed shook his head. “Not today. I arranged everything with Vonda and my boss, and we’re playing hooky.”
“Are you serious?”
He grabbed my beard and gave a little tug. “I knew today would be tough for you, so I thought we could do something special while Jake’s at school.”
My melancholy mood lifted, excitement taking its place. “What did you have in mind?”
Creed pulled me close and whispered in my ear, “I’m going to make you breakfast, then I’m going to make love to you. After that, I’m going to make you lunch while you recover, and then I think I’ll blow you. Since your mom is still going to pick our boy up from school so he can adjust to his new schedule, before we go get him, we’re going to take a shower so that I can make you feel good one last time. How does that sound?” He bit the lobe of my ear.
This man. Two and a half years in and he still managed to surprise me. I’m not sure how, though, since he’d made me his priority from the minute we met. “I think it sounds like we better get in the house so you can get busy,” I said with a wink, then I smacked his ass and strode up the driveway, knowing he’d catch up and be right there beside me—always.
