It's Complicated - J. S. Cooper Page 0,73

I love them. It’s always great to see them. But, I mean, I already accidentally told Grandma that I have a date tomorrow and I really don’t want her to ask any questions.”

“Oh yeah. You’re seeing Connor tomorrow, right?”

“Yes, I am and I just don’t know what I’m thinking.” I shook my head. “I’m absolutely crazy because he’s not even looking for anything serious, but I’m so curious as to what this date is going to be.”

“The final date. Wow.” Sarah grinned. “It reminds me of, what’s that song? The final count down,” she sang.

“Yeah. But wasn’t the final countdown something bad? Was it the final countdown to a bomb going off?”

“No, girl. Wasn’t it a game show?”

“Oh yeah. But back to Connor and the date. I just don’t know what I’m thinking. I’m just not sure why it’s happening. I mean, am I stupid for going on this date with him?”

“No, give it a chance. It will be fun. And you know what? Even if it’s not, cut it short and be like, ‘Hasta la vista, baby.’ He cut your last date short, so you can cut this one short.”

“That’s true.” I grinned at her. “Good advice. And actually, maybe I’ll do that anyway, just so he knows how it feels.”

“Yeah, girl. You don’t have to be all nice and sweet. That’s the problem with us women.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, we’re always nice and sweet. And we always have this guilt complex. Men don’t have that. If they’re not feeling something or someone, they peace out so quickly, but us, if we’re not feeling someone, we still feel we have to be nice and sweet and polite because we don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings. And we stay around too long. Fuck it, girl. If you don’t like Connor and what he has planned, just leave. Call me, make an excuse. I don’t care. Do whatever you want to do.”

“That’s true. I’m not going to just be Ms. Nice.” I looked at her. “You know what? Lucas called me today and he kind of was wondering if I wanted to meet up tonight. I’m thinking maybe I should.”

“Why? What did you tell him?”

“I told him that I wasn’t available, but only because I was feeling guilty about meeting up with him tonight and then meeting up with Connor tomorrow. But you know what? What do I care about that? It’s not like it’s going anywhere with Connor anyway.”

“Girl, do it. Call him now.”

“You think so?”

“Yeah. Call him now to set something up for tonight. Shit, you already know Connor is not looking for anything long-term so you don’t have anything to feel guilty about.”

“True.” I pulled my phone out of my handbag. “Hold on. I’m going to call him now if you don’t mind.”

“Yeah, go ahead.” I walked over to the window and looked outside as I waited for him to pick up the phone.

“Hey there, Gemma. How’s it going?” He said after a couple of rings.

“Hi Lucas. I wanted to call instead of text, because I just wanted to let you know that I’m actually free tonight if you still want to meet up.”

“Oh, that sounds absolutely fantastic. I was thinking about cooking dinner for you at my place. Is that okay?”

“Yeah. Sounds perfect,” I said. “You want to text me the address and I’ll catch a taxi over there later tonight?”

“Great. I’ll send you the address. If you can get here around eight, that would be great.”

“That sounds perfect. See you then.” I hung up and then turned around and walked back over to Sarah, grabbed her arms and jumped up and down. “I have a date with Lucas at his place tonight at eight o’clock.”

“Oh my gosh.” Sarah squealed along with me. “That is exciting. What do you think is going to happen?”

“I don’t know,” I shrugged, “But you know what? A girl has needs. And now that I only have one man in my life that I’m seriously dating, maybe those needs will be met.”

“Oh my gosh. You’re not going to sleep with him tonight, are you?”

“I don’t know. Never say never.” I giggled. “Maybe tonight’s the night.”

“Ooh.” Sarah grinned. “I cannot wait to hear all about it.”

“I know. I just—” I was interrupted by a knocking at the door.

“Gemma, you in here?” The door opened and my Grandma was standing there. A slight frown on her face. “I thought you come to the kitchen to get some baklava? Come, come.” She looked at
