It's Complicated - J. S. Cooper Page 0,126

gruffly. I quickly unlocked the door, opened it and he came in. I closed it shut behind me and locked it and looked at him. He was frowning as he stared at me. “So Gemma. Got yourself in a little pickle, have you?”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” I said, jutting my lower lip out, annoyed at the tone in his voice.

“You certainly sound a lot better. Feeling better, I guess?” he said and raised one eyebrow as he looked me up and down.

“Connor, look.”

“Gemma.” He held his hand up, “I get it. At least I think I get it. Let me see if I’ve got this right. You’re dating me and my brother, right?”

“I wouldn’t say that exactly.” I made a face and walked over to the bed and sat down. “Okay, so maybe I’ve gone on dates with both of you guys. Maybe.” I looked up at him to see if he was pissed. “I don’t know what to do. I feel awful. I’m so sorry, Connor.”

“You have nothing to be sorry about, Gemma. We certainly weren’t in an exclusive relationship. Um, I don’t think you’re in one with Lucas, are you?”

“No, but if I’d known you were brothers, I…” I looked away from him. “I just feel really icky.”

“Did you sleep with him?” His voice dropped, and he came and sat next to me on the bed.

“Um, what do you mean by sleep with him?” I looked up at him, licked my lips nervously again.

“What do you fucking think I mean, Gemma?” He laughed, but the sound wasn’t humorous. “Did you fuck him?”

“No!” I shook my head. “No, we never had sex. I told you the other day. You’re the only one I’ve slept with recently.”

“Okay.” He smiled. “So what about other stuff?”

“What do you mean?” I could feel my cheeks going red. Oh my God. This was a conversation I did not want to have.

“Okay.” He nodded. “That answers my question.” He stood up, ran his hand through his hair. “So I’m guessing you want to be with Lucas, huh?”

“Well, why do you say that?” I said softly.

“Because he’s my exact opposite. All the women want Lucas. Lucas is looking for a wife. Lucas is looking for kids, and I know that’s what you want. You want a serious relationship, so Lucas is your best bet.”

“So you’re telling me I should be with your brother?”

“I am. I mean, he’s what you want, right?” He turned around and looked at me. “Right?”

“I guess.” I shrugged. Basically, it seemed to me that Connor was telling me to go out with his brother. It hurt. It really hurt, but I didn’t know what else to say. “Well, he’s not going to want to be with me now,” I said finally.

“And why not?” Connor walked over to the side of the room, and I could see him punching the wall softly. I didn’t know why he was doing it, and I didn’t question him.

“Well, who wants to date a girl that’s fucked their brother?” I said crudely. “I mean, I’m sure Lucas doesn’t. Does he know about us?” Connor turned around and walked over to me. “Does he even know that I know you?”

“Well, downstairs, I…” Connor shrugged. “There are many different reasons why we could say we know each other. You could say you met me at a rave. You could say you met me at a club. I’m a music producer. I know a lot of people. It doesn’t have to be through the dating app.”

“So you’re saying we should lie?” I asked him. “You’re saying that we should tell him that we met at a rave?”

“I’m saying that if you want to be with Lucas and you think he’s the one for you because he can give you things that I can’t, then it’s most probably better that he doesn’t know that I fucked you. Yeah, that’s what I’m saying.”

“And you would lie to him too?”

“Sure.” He shrugged. “What do I care?”

“I guess you don’t care. You’ve made that very apparent.”

“I’ve made it very apparent? Just exactly what did you do with my brother, Gemma, and when?”

“Connor, we don’t need to have this conversation. You are just too much. You know that, right?”

“There you were, acting all shocked that I dated two girls at the same time and that I’ve been in open relationships. And you were dating me and having sex with me and doing stuff with my brother? Like, who are you to judge me?”

“Who are
