or something, then gotten right up in his face.

Instead, he lost balance and toppled backward onto my desk. He landed on the stacks of neatly organized—but extensive—files and contracts I’d gathered for the trip. About half of the papers slid right off the desk and managed to fan out from a few neat stacks on my desk into dozens of papers strewn all over the floor.

Silas laughed, which pissed me off even more, so I moved like I was going to punch him.

He held his arm up to guard, but I didn’t go through with the punch. I settled on kicking his shin as hard as I could with the hard tip of my dress shoe.

“Fuck!” he hissed. “Jesus, you really want to sleep with her, huh?”

“Don’t ever call her that word again, or I will punch you next time.”

“Alright, alright,” he said, slowly getting up from the desk, his arm still out in case I decided to punch him anyway.

He straightened his jacket and tie, and looked at me with a very concerned expression. “You need to have your head in the game for this trip. Let her do her nanny thing, and you stay with me. With our authors.”

I nodded. He was right. I needed to sideline the shit with Lacey, at least for this cruise. I rarely lost my cool like this, even around Silas.

“I need to help get Naomi ready,” I said. “I’ll meet you at the pier.”

Naomi’s room was an explosion of toys, clothes, and books.

Carla had already left. Naomi had hugged her goodbye, and I’d written her a nice bonus check for all the good work she’d done.

I wanted to make sure she was out before Lacey got here. The last thing I needed was it slipping to Carla that the new nanny was getting paid a million bucks.

“No, Daddy!” Naomi shrieked as I tried to put some of her books back.

“It’s a week, sweetheart,” I said. “You don’t need fifty books for a one-week trip.”

“If I don’t bring all the Peppa Pig books, then the other ones I leave behind will get sad.”

“Books don’t have feelings,” I said. “And if that’s the case, then let’s leave them all behind so that none of them feel left out.”

She threw herself down flat on the pile of Peppa Pig books so that I couldn’t move any more of them back onto her bookshelf.

We needed to be on the way to the pier in about an hour. It was getting close to the point where I had to put my foot down and just tell her “no.”

There was a knock on the door, and my heart started pounding. It must be her.

“I got a surprise for you,” I said to Naomi.

She’d heard me offering this job to Lacey, but I didn’t tell her it had gone through. Another trick with 4-year-olds was to make as many things as possible into “a surprise.”

Naomi looked up at the door, which gave me an opening to grab the whole stack of Peppa Pig books and throw them onto the shelf while she was distracted.

“Come in!” I shouted.

I stood up quickly, not wanting Lacey to see me crouched down on the floor in a big mess of kid’s crap.

I adjusted my tie just as she entered.

It took a lot for me to maintain my cool. To not brazenly look down at her. I still did look down at her body, just not completely brazenly. It was hard not to, because she was wearing shorts. Short shorts. The kind that don’t even cover a woman’s ass cheeks. Her shirt was tight and didn’t even cover her midriff, and it gave me a good look at her cleavage too. Her hair was mostly a mess. Tied up in a tangled bun, loose strands hanging down everywhere. Her glasses slipped down her nose, and she pushed them back up and smiled awkwardly at me.

Her whole body was glistening with sweat. I desperately wanted to take her into my arms and just smell her. To tear my stuffy suit off and press my skin against hers. To feel her warmth against mine.

“Welcome,” I said, forcing my eyes back up to hers.

“Hey,” she said, taking in the giant mess that was Naomi’s room and trying to conceal her surprised reaction to it.

The rest of my house was perfectly neat. I had the housekeeping staff see to that. Naomi’s room was the most chaotic place in the entire house though. I could have had it kept
