asked and looked in the car.
“We’ll find them,” Xeon assured him. They had to find them. He wouldn’t lose Mara just after finding her.
“I know. Hunter is on his way to relieve Brody at the doctor’s house. So far, no one has come home at all. How long do you want someone to watch the house?”
“Until the doctor comes home, or we find all our pack mates.” Xeon didn’t want that house out of their sights. “Take the car home. We have a Sheriff to question.”
“He hadn’t been much help. I doubt he’ll give you anything else.” Ryder slid into the driver’s seat of Raveena’s car.
“I have different questions to ask him now.” Like where the hell he took Mara. Xeon’s anger grew when he thought about what they could be doing to her.
Back in the SUV, Xeon and Kyro went straight to the Sheriff’s department. Langley had been railroading them this whole time. He had plenty of time to warn Dr. Phenix of their search. He led them to the warehouse, thinking that the bear would take care of them. Now, he would tell them where Dr. Phenix was keeping the other shifters or suffer the consequences.
Xeon parked in front of the Sheriff’s building then calmly walked into the main lobby.
“I need to speak with Sheriff Langley,” Xeon told the woman behind the desk.
“I’m sorry, he’s not in.” She smiled, looking up at him.
“Do you know when he’ll be back in?” Kyro asked from beside him.
“He came down with a virus. He took some personal time, so I don’t expect him back for a few days.”
“Can you give him a call for me?” Xeon asked nicely.
“I wish I could, but I really can’t. You can leave a message, and I’ll make sure he gets it.”
“No, don’t worry about it.” Xeon turned and headed for the door with his beta in tow.
“I’m not buying it,” Kyro said after they left the building.
“Of course not. He may have taken time off, but it damn sure wasn’t for a virus.” Xeon rolled his eyes, climbing into the SUV. “He’s in on this. That makes him guilty just like the doctor and anyone else working with them.”
“We can’t let that mad man experiment on Mara again.” Kyro buckled his seat belt, then rolled down the window, letting the wind hit him in the face. He needed it to help calm him and clear his head.
“It’s not like we let him the first time. If Mara had stayed put, this wouldn’t have happened. Why do women never listen?” Xeon pulled out of the parking lot. The speed didn’t matter at all. They had to find their mate… NOW!
“And women say men never listen,” Kyro commented.
“Let’s get back to the compound. We’ll come up with a plan.” Xeon didn’t need to remind himself that they would find Mara, he knew in his heart if they didn’t, nothing else would matter from this moment on. There was no other options.
Xeon broke every speed limit between there and home. On the way to the compound, Kyro called to check in with Brody. No one had been in or out of the doctor’s house since they’d raided the hospital.
They made it to the compound in record time. Xeon didn’t bother to go to the house. Instead, he pulled up in front of the meeting house, where the front door was still open. Kale paced inside and peeked out when he passed by the door. Xeon understood his anxiety. Kale walked out to meet them.
“Did you find her?” Kale asked the moment Xeon opened his door.
“Not yet Kale, but we will.” Xeon got out of the SUV and walked Kale back inside.
“I don’t like this, Xeon. I don’t like it at all.” The old man hung his head. “What if you can’t find them?”
“We will,” Xeon assured him.
Xeon understood why the man had his doubts. Some of the shifters had been missing for nearly two months. There’s no telling what the doctor had done to them in that amount of time. He just hoped that they wouldn’t be broken like Zeke. Xeon’s phone rang from his pocket when they walked inside. He looked at the screen.
“Ethan, please tell me you have good news,” Xeon said, stress eating his stomach.
“I don’t know about good news, but I have some information for you. Jai ran a search on all the property Dr. Phenix owns,” Ethan said.
“All right, where are they?”
“He has a house that he shared with his wife, but it
