if he can see ghosts, or maybe it was just his dad since they were so close."
"Hmm. I don't really know what makes it possible for people to see ghosts. I still have no idea why you can see me. I think sometimes people put up a wall where they just refuse to see what's right in front of them, like Natalie. Sometimes the brain will just refuse to accept something and shut that section off. Maybe I got to you early enough you didn't know I wasn't supposed to be here."
"Maybe..." I trailed off shutting my eyes but my brain kept thinking about all the 'what if' possibilities and it was a while before I finally fell asleep.
Chapter 11
My alarm went off the next day and I struggled to pull myself out of bed. I was lucky enough that mom was around to give me a ride in. The rest of the day was sleepy and hard to be nice to customers. Finally it was quitting time, I clocked out and stepped outside. As per usual of lately, Jon was standing out front waiting for me.
"Hey," I trudged up to him and gave him a hug, half falling into him for support. "You guys were practicing?" I asked realizing there was a guitar on his back making it difficult to hold on.
"Yeah, Kate demanded an audition so we all got together last minute since I have to go to work."
"Did she?"
"Yeah, you know she has a beautiful voice, she was harmonizing her way right around Danny, so we all agreed it would be nice to have back up singers."
"Oh really?"
"Yeah, so what are you doing this afternoon?"
"I don't really have any plans..."
"Do you feel like auditioning with the rest of the band?"
"Seriously?"
"Yeah, you pretty much are already in if you want to, they just want to hear how you sound with Kate."
"Are you going to be there or are you going to work?"
"I have to go to work. Actually George had to go to work too, so it will just be you and Kate and Danny, and of course Spencer will be there too."
"Oh geez. Yeah sure I guess so."
"You really don't have to if you're nervous about it."
"No, I'm just like, I don't know. I think it will be fun but right now I'm more scared of Mr. Madrigal telling me my voice is shit."
"I don't think Kate or Spencer would let him say anything bad to you. He's not that bad anyway, I think he's enough of a perfectionist that he'll try to coach you instead of criticize you."
"So should I go over now?"
"Sure, I'll walk you over if you want, they're working some songs out now."
"All right then."
"So I'm sorry I fell asleep on the way home last night. Was Spencer really okay?"
"Yeah he was cool. We stopped at a rest stop and he waited for me while I was in the bathroom, being all protective of me. He's all right now that I know him a little better."
"Good, that's good."
"Yeah, so he told me that your dad died when you were really young, I'm sorry about that I had no idea."
"Yeah, I don't really like to talk about it."
"Oh, sorry."
"It's just still a sore subject between me and my mom. I was only 12. And she kind of fell apart for a while."
"He mentioned something like that."
"What else did he say?"
"Well, he said one time he overheard you talking to someone, but no one was there with you."
"Oh."
"Jon, can you see dead people?"
He looked over at me with a look that couldn't believe I just asked him that and it took him a long time to answer.
"When my dad first died, I could see him for a few years. Then I guess he moved on at some point, I don't remember when exactly. I just didn't see him anymore."
"You could see him?" I was getting a little excited now.
He sighed and stopped walking. "Look Lucy, I don't want to scare you away, I'm really not a freak or anything."
"No, no, no, of course not. I'm not on a witch hunt here, I'm kind of fascinated by this."
"Fascinated?"
"Yeah," I said taking his hands in mine and giving him a gentle kiss. "You can trust me Jon."
"You're not going to run away from me?"
"No."
"It's just that it's happened before. I mean, well, this is the real reason why I didn't have a lot of friends. People thought I was creepy."
"Oh."
"You know it was like I guess people
