home like an idiot. Of course, it would have only given them another weapon to use against her, since she couldn’t fight off the two of them. They had a firm hold and were far stronger than she was.
She struggled against them, not giving up willingly despite the odds stacked heavily against her, and one of her attackers backhanded her. Brett’s cheek stung, and her ear rang from the blow, but she didn’t make a sound. She wasn’t going to give them the satisfaction of showing weakness, and she didn’t want to call attention to them, in case they didn’t plan to kill her at the moment.
She could handle anything else they dealt her.
The one holding her arms behind her, his hand tight around her wrists, shoved her against the wall, scraping her face and arms on the brick. The other man stepped up beside her, flashing a knife in her face. In a whisper so she couldn’t tell if she recognized his voice or not, he said, “Let it go, bitch. You have no right to sell out to another club.”
So, this was about the club. She tried to shake her head but didn’t have room to move. “I wasn’t planning on it, dick for brains.” She spat at him, and the guy holding her slammed her against the wall again. She grunted, wincing at the pain but showing no other outward signs of it.
“You think we’re stupid? Everyone knows what you’re planning,” he continued, still cloaking his voice. “Everyone. And if you don’t get fucked over by someone on the inside, you’ll get fucked over by someone on the outside.”
The man holding her chuckled and pressed his body against her, making it obvious this was a huge turn on for him. “Why don’t we just fuck her now?” he said. The voice might have been familiar, but Brett was too panicked to place it. She thrust her head backward, connecting with the man’s nose, and he roared with anger.
He yanked her away from the wall and threw her to the ground. Something hot and stinging dragged across her arm, and she howled at the pain, realizing the knife had caught her on the way down. She barely avoided smashing her face on the pavement, managing to roll before he was on top of her. He tore at her shirt, and she lifted a knee, connecting with his balls hard enough to give him pause. But she didn’t have the leverage to hurt him as the man with the knife trapped her arms over her head.
Terrified, Brett flailed and writhed, trying her best to get away, or at least delay what suddenly seemed to be inevitable. The man on top of her twisted his mouth grotesquely, the ski mask hiding the rest of his face, and he spat on her. “How does it feel, bitch? I think it’s time to teach you where your place is. You don’t sit at the head of the table. You lay under him.”
Brett tried to lunge, but the man slapped her again, so hard she saw stars. Still, she bucked against him, and he shoved his knee into her ribs twice, making her cough and groan. There was no way she was getting out of this, and she could only hope they didn’t decide to kill her when they were done assaulting her. Closing her eyes, she said a quick prayer that this would be over quickly.
The sound of a gun firing nearby made her wince, and Brett waited for the pain to ensue. But nothing happened, even as more shots fired. In fact, the weight on top of her disappeared, leaving her disoriented and confused. She dared to open one eye, and she gasped as Dennis hurried toward her, gun still in hand and pointed past her. She heard feet hitting the ground hard, the two assailants running away, and Dennis fired two more shots before he reached her and knelt beside her.
“Fucking hell,” he muttered, looking down at her. “You’re bleeding everywhere. Are you alright?”
Brett couldn’t say for sure, but she didn’t think anything was permanently damaged. “Nothing’s broken,” she croaked, letting him help her sit up. Now, she was completely at a loss. All this time, she’d assumed Dennis was her adversary, and here he was, suddenly saving her from a fate she didn’t know if she could have lived with. “What are you doing here?”
“Saving your ass, apparently,” he replied sarcastically. “I came to talk to you. Everything’s getting
