was an accident, but the rest of you were on purpose. I'm sorry I'm leaving and won't be here when the rest of your families are found, but I'm nothing but a phone call away."
Cary snorted, twirling his pointer finger at the ceiling. "Whoop-de-doo, Romeo. No offense, but your psychic powers only work by touching someone. You might be able to cheer us on by phone, but you won't be able to touch us and get a vision. What if the rest of us belong to serial killers or bank robbers? What if my parents turn out to be both deaf and blind? They would never be able to understand my superpowers if I can't project images or distort sound for them."
When we all started laughing at Cary's ridiculousness, he sniffed and held up his hands. "What? It could happen. Obviously. I mean, look at Alex and Josh. I bet they never thought their parents were kidnappers, now did they? Or how Josh started his life named Two and living in a barn with fourteen other stolen babies."
Harvey sent a glass of water flying through the air, hovering over Cary's head. "Quit trying to freak everyone out or I'm going to dump this on you. Don't test me. You know I'll do it."
With a wink to Harvey, I grinned at Cary. "Don't risk it. He's the crazy one. Who else would name themselves after an imaginary friend?"
Harvey didn't buy my playful wink for a second. Instead, he lifted another glass to float over my head. "Et tu, Brute? We don't joke about Jimmy Stewart movies, remember? Besides, going with Harvey was my inside joke about my powers. If people ever suspect I'm telepathic, I'll claim I have a ghost as a friend."
"Let me guess, and your friend would be a six-foot-three rabbit like Harvey?" Even though I was teasing, I thought Harvey was the perfect name for my telekinetic brother. Also, I still wasn't sure whether the invisible rabbit in the movie was real or not. Either Jimmy Stewart's character was deeper than he seemed at face value, or there really was a rabbit somewhere in there. Frankly, the whole thing gave me the creeps, but Harvey liked it, and nothing else mattered.
"I don't know. Maybe I'll get Cary to come visit and trot out the Canterville Ghost again. His version was beyond epic."
As we started laughing at the memory, I tried not to think about the scarier aspects of our escape. And none of us had ever mentioned the way Teacher had died… or how my brothers had ripped his body apart. Lucian promised it was totally present and accounted for when they cleaned the scene, so at least no one went Donner Party on him. But then again, I couldn’t imagine he would've had the best flavor, even if someone had cannibalistic tendencies. Someone so evil couldn't possibly taste like anything other than sulfur and cod liver oil.
Darcy got Romeo's attention once everything fell quiet. "When you were touching everyone, did you see a family or mates for all of us? I know you don't like to share the future. But… I have a feeling my parents won't be found. You don't have to tell me if you don't want to, but if you saw anything from my future, I wouldn't mind hearing. I promise it won't change any choices I make. You know I always follow my intuition."
After a second's hesitation, Romeo nodded. "You have a true mate, and you'll meet him through one of Lucian's friends. I won't tell you which one because it's not my place to hurry fate along. You'll find out when the time is right. But I think you're correct about your family because in the vision I saw, Lucian had a baby on his hip, and you were still living here."
"Makes sense, since Lucian promised to protect any of us who had nowhere else to go." Darcy stared off into the distance before looking back at Romeo and waggling his eyebrows. "So you saw my true mate, huh? Do I get a hint? Eye and hair color, maybe? Is he sexy? Wait, don't answer. Then I'll be angry because you said my mate is sexy, and I'll have to call and yell at you after I meet him."
Throwing my napkin at him, I snorted and shook my head at Darcy. "You're ridiculous, and we both know it. You can't get jealous over someone you haven't even met yet. At the moment,
