a tight ass?”
“You’re not paying my mortgage.” I glared at Opie.
He glared right back. “I just spent the last few days selling a ton of my shit I had stored in a facility just sitting there taking up space. You can bet your ass that I’m paying off your mortgage.”
“It doesn’t cover all of it. There would still be a third left to pay,” Grant said.
“But it means he should’ve some time to come up with the rest,” Opie replied. “I’m pretty sure I have some other stuff I could sell, but right now, the important thing is that you take this money and add it to his mortgage balance.”
“What money?” I was confused as hell. What were they talking about?
The sheriff turned Grant’s computer monitor toward me and pointed at what seemed to be Opie’s account. My heart leaped in my chest when I saw the amount at the bottom of the screen.
“Where the fuck did you get all that money?”
“I told you. I sold all my stuff. My shoes, my jewelry. Other stuff.” He waved his hand as if it wasn’t important.
“We can’t be sure of that,” Grant said. “We have to validate where all that money came from. You’re telling me that selling your possessions brought in so much money?”
“When you are in a relationship with important men who want to hide you from the world, they’re more than willing to part with expensive stuff. I have a receipt for every single item I sold.”
With his free hand, he reached inside his jacket and tugged out a wad of papers he placed on the desk.
“I’m telling you that the money is legit,” Opie said. “Now I’m kindly asking you to apply that amount to Lawson’s mortgage.”
“You’re too late,” Grant said.
A knock on the door sounded, followed by a slam against the wall from that same door. Anders of all people. I groaned and ran a hand through my hair. Just fucking great. Now all that was missing to this crazy party was my dad.
“This is a private affair, son,” Donald said. “How did you get in here?”
“The security guard let me in,” he answered with a shrug.
“That man and I need to have words.” The sheriff stalked out but then turned. “If y’all don’t sort this mess out, I’ll haul your asses off to jail, just for wasting my time with all this nonsense.”
I didn’t bother to point out this wasn’t constitutional. I glared at Anders. “What are you doing here?”
“I’m here to help. I heard what was happening.”
“You’re here to help?” I scoffed.
Anders ignored me and walked over to Grant. He frowned at his partner and nodded at Opie. “He’s turning you on, isn’t he?”
Awkward moment. Grant tried to stammer a response while Opie tried to separate himself from Grant while still handcuffed to him. Now I understood why he and Ms. Cluck got along so well together. They shared a brain.
“Listen to me, Grant. I take back everything I said, all right? I’ll come home. Just stop trying to take his ranch away.”
Grant furrowed his brow. “This has nothing to do with you. I’m just doing my job.”
“We both know you’re not. You got upset because I told you it was over. I’m sorry. I’ll come back home. Just stop being so difficult. Do it for me.”
“Why should I? All you talk about is how fucking great he is in bed.”
Anders’s face flushed a fiery red. Huh? I’d never seen him blush like that. I was surprised he was even capable of blushing. Opie didn’t seem too happy with the sudden turn of events. He was staring at Anders as though any minute now he would go for the jugular.
“That was unfair to you, but we can talk about it later,” Anders said. “And all the ways I’ll make it up to you. Please.’
Grant let out a frustrated sound. “I’ll reconsider. But we still have to validate where all this money came from, which may take a few days. Lawson, I’ll see you here tomorrow, and we’ll work out the new arrangement, given the bulk of the mortgage would have been paid off.” He glowered at Opie. “Now will you please take this thing off me?”
Opie dug into his boot with his right hand and came up with a slender key, which he used to unlatch the handcuff from Grant’s wrist. “Thank you. That wasn’t so hard, now was it?”
The sheriff had returned to the office and sighed. “I’m taking it everything is resolved?”
Was it?
