trash.

“This is your party. You shouldn’t be helping.” My sister clutches my forearm, pulling the trash bag from my fist. Without even looking, she hangs it out to the side for Tug to take. He presses a kiss to her temple before walking away and picking up where I left off.

When she steps away, my eyes dart around the room. Only I find Colton’s back as he heads for the front door instead of spotting him across the room where he was moments ago. Does he really think he can just walk out of here and leave me behind? That is not on the agenda for tonight.

Chapter 23

Colton

I couldn’t even imagine getting the news this club just got hit with, and no matter how curious I am, it’s not my business. It didn’t happen in my jurisdiction because I would’ve gotten the call about a homicide long before family and friends were notified of a suspect’s arrest.

I pull my phone out of my pocket as I leave, just to make sure I didn’t miss something while trying to will my dick to deflate after Sophia’s damn filthy texts. She’s a different level of distraction than I’ve ever known.

Nope. Nothing. I breathe a sigh of relief. I hope I never have to work a case against a fellow officer, and I’m doubly glad I’m not having to work a case against a man under the protection of the Cerberus MC.

Cool air hits me in the face as I step outside, a sharp relief to the warmth that was filling my cheeks inside the clubhouse. I could blame the abundance of people in the large room, but I know it’s the thoughts of that damn temptress in there that’s making me warm from head to toe. Hell, even after watching a group of people horrified with bad news, my cock is still semi-interested in what Sophia was offering via text message.

“Detective Matthews!”

I keep walking, knowing if I stop and face her, I’ll end up making a huge mistake—one I won’t be able to argue against if her dad walks out of the clubhouse.

“Colton!” she snaps when I reach for the door of my truck.

“Go back inside, Sophia.”

She shoves me from behind, the surprise of it making me stumble more than the force she’s able to manage.

“Turn around.” The command makes my cock throb—not because I like being bossed around but from the gall of thinking she can tell me what to do. “I need answers.”

“I thought we said just one—”

Jesus, if she tempts me tonight, I won’t be able to walk away.

“Not that.” My heart deflates. “I need to know what’s going on with Drew.”

“I don’t know anything. It didn’t happen here.”

“I know, but you’re a cop. Use some of that professional courtesy we talked about before and find out.”

“From the sounds of it, it’s still an open investigation. I can’t call the department he’s working for and ask for information.”

“The State Police,” she corrects.

“Especially them,” I mutter. “You know how this goes, Sophia. We’ve worked several cases together from start to finish. If it happened in the last twenty-four hours, there’s a good chance the information isn’t even in their system. Those men are having to work a case against one of their own, and I can’t get involved in that. It could bring heat down on my department.”

“Okay.” She hangs her head in disappointment, but I know she knows I’m right.

I open the truck door, ready to tell her goodnight although I don’t want to, but she shoves past me and climbs across the driver’s seat, settling her sexy ass body against the passenger window.

If she leaves here tonight with me, she won’t be going home. I know her father already suspects something with the way he glared at me when she pressed her hot, little lips to my cheek in greeting when I arrived. Of course, her mother just smiled at the two of us, but her look was knowing as well. I could be on a damn hitlist already, and I’ve only been here an hour and a half.

“What are you doing?” I try to hide the smile at her brazen attitude, but it’s impossible.

All she does is smile at me.

“How much have you had to drink?”

“Why? Are you wanting to take advantage?”

This little devil.

“Sophia,” I warn.

“Yes, Daddy?” She giggles, but her words make my face screw up. “I have you in my phone as Daddy.”

I cringe even further. I never considered the woman having daddy issues as
