on full display. “I should be concerned about flying glass and nails and all this exposed skin.”
Jake’s gaze made it back to her eyes. “Skin was all I heard.”
It was her turn to smirk. “I was wondering what I was going to do about all the flying debris.”
“I would be more than happy to inspect every inch of you later to see if there’s anything that needs further attention.”
Her heart fluttered a little at that—stupid, considering their precarious situation, not to mention that she was really trying hard to remember that Jake was the last guy she should be reacting to. “Wow, you really are a great guy.” She knew he’d hear every drop of sarcasm.
There were several seconds of silence.
“A?”
“Yeah?”
“I think you need to cover up.”
“You see some flying debris?”
“Nope. I don’t see anything other than a lot of places that I’d like to put my tongue.”
Heat washed over her and she felt her cheeks get pink. Whenever she thought she had the upper hand, he said something like that.
“Covering up sounds like a great idea.”
She reached for the blanket he held, but he pulled it away from her. “We need to use this.”
They did. They were in a tornado warning. Things could start flying around. They needed to drape the blanket over them both when things got hairy.
“Here.” Jake unbuttoned his shirt and shrugged out of it, handing it over.
Her mouth went dry. She’d had sex with the guy, like, twenty minutes ago, and she still felt wound up and turned on and like she’d never seen a man’s bare chest before.
She hadn’t seen many—and this one was about a twelve on a ten-point scale—but it was only a chest.
She slipped into his shirt without a word. It was still warm from his body, and it smelled good. She pulled it tight around her and tried not to look at him. That turned out to be very difficult when they were practically sitting on top of each other.
“You’re going to have to get closer,” he said, flipping out the blanket. “This needs to cover us both.”
That was a bad idea. Still, she scooted forward until their knees touched.
Even that much made her far too aware of him. They were nearly nose to nose. And they’d had sex very recently. Not a small detail.
Across the entire gymnasium of the school, she would have felt itchy and restless and hot thinking about it. Inches apart in an enclosed space, both mostly naked . . . yeah, she’d never been more uncomfortable.
They draped the blanket over them both like the tents little kids made out of blankets and couch cushions. Then Jake reached out from under the blanket and pulled something closer, blocking the entrance to their sort-of fort. From the scraping sound it made across the concrete, she guessed it was one of the big plastic totes.
It wasn’t like either of them believed that their hiding spot and make-do-with-what-we-have protection was going to save their lives if an EF4 tornado decided to make them a direct target. But she knew they would have both recommended what they were doing to anyone in their situation. Protecting your head and face was first and foremost. Becoming as small a target as possible was important. There were no windows in the shed to worry about, but they were as far away from the door as they could get, and they were as low as they could get, and they were surrounded by heavy objects that could protect them from everyday objects that turned into missiles in the winds of a tornado.
When she focused, she could hear the sirens still squealing and the roar of the wind whipping around the building. Occasionally there was the thump of something hitting the building.
But she had to really concentrate.
Jake filled all her attention if she didn’t strain to hear anything outside their cocoon.
“Want to play twenty questions?” he asked.
“Seriously?”
“We have to do something, and the other thing I’m thinking of is inappropriate given the circumstances.”
“More inappropriate now than it was before?”
She should have let it go. She should have diverted the conversation. She should have never come to the shed with him and thought she was going to get out of here unscathed.
“I didn’t know there was a tornado bearing down on the town before.”
“Ah. That’s the only thing that makes the sex-in-a-shed thing inappropriate.”
He chuckled and she sucked in a quick breath. She liked when he laughed.
“We’re two consenting adults, no one saw us, no one
