a drink out of your refrigerator.”
I rushed to my room and changed out of my dress. After hanging it carefully and placing it in a garment bag, I slipped on leggings, an oversized t-shirt, and my slides.
“When are you going to propose to India?” I asked as I strolled into my living room.
He coughed, choking on whatever was in his cup. Clearly caught off guard, his eyes were like saucers. “What?”
I glared at him. “Don’t act like you’ve never thought about it before.”
“I don’t even know what you’re talking about.” He finished his drink and then went to the kitchen to throw his cup away. “But I need to head to the airport,” he said on his way back.
I crossed my arms over my chest as I followed him to the door. “You are acting real squirrelly right now.”
A smile played on his lips as he denied my claims. “I’m being regular. I just have to go, and I don’t want to be late.”
“Mm hmm.” I eyed him suspiciously as he leaned in for a hug. When we pulled apart, I grabbed his face and looked him in his eyes. “I see it in your face every time you talk about her. I don’t know how long she’s in town, but don’t squander the opportunity.” My hands dropped. “I think she’s the one, Trenton. I really do.”
He opened the door and I followed him outside. “You know what?”
“What?” I stood on the stoop as he went down the stairs.
He turned, readjusting his bag on his shoulder. He started walking backward. “I’m glad you got all this shit off your chest before tomorrow.”
I laughed. “Goodbye, Trenton!”
He lifted his hand before he got in his car. I watched him in his car for a minute and then waved as he drove off.
I looked over and my neighbor was just standing there looking at me. Dressed in a tight ass tracksuit, Darius wasn’t even pretending he was doing anything other than being nosey.
“What are you? The neighborhood watch?” I snapped.
“Nah, but I watch a new man run in and out of you and your loft every day,” Darius called out just as I was about to go back into my loft.
I stopped in my tracks and folded my arms over my chest. “I’m sure Ciara wishes there was a new man running in and out of her every day.”
He grabbed himself. “I’m more than enough for my woman.”
“Your pants are tight as hell and still, no print.”
“I’m a grower not a shower,” he growled.
“I doubt it.”
He lifted his hands in the air, moving to the edge of the stoop. “I’ll pull it out right now and show you.”
I shook my head. “I don’t need to see your little nugget to know I’m right. I can tell by the way you carry yourself.”
“And how do I carry myself?”
“Like you sit down to pee.”
He looked like he was about to laugh. “Whatever you say, cum junkie.”
I curled my lip in disgust and went into my loft, slamming the door behind me before I burst out laughing.
“What the fuck? Cum junkie?” I snickered to myself as I headed to the kitchen.
Twenty minutes after I started preparing my signature dish for the dinner party, I heard a loud bang. I could hear the neighbors through the wall.
“I’m tired of working and then coming home to cook and clean, too,” Ciara yelled. “Pick one. You want me to be Hardworking Susan or Susie Homemaker? Because I’m not going to be both.”
“If we’re being real, you’re barely being either. You’re more like Middle-of-the-Road Molly,” Darius replied loudly.
I almost dropped the marinade I was holding because I didn’t see that response coming. He gets on my last nerve, but he’s kinda funny, I admitted to myself.
“If you don’t like my cooking, go find a bitch who will cook for you. I’m tired!” She was screaming, obviously irate.
“You heated up some pizza rolls and you’re acting like it was a gourmet meal. Come on, Ciara,” Darius complained. “What’s really going on?”
“Are you cheating on me?” she wailed.
I wrapped the chicken breasts up so they could marinate overnight, but I didn’t move because I wanted to hear the answer to the question.
“No, I’m not cheating on you! What the fuck are you talking about?” Darius yelled back.
“Why haven’t we had sex today?” she questioned.
“It’s not even ten o’clock yet!” he answered.
“You want me to kiss your ass and you won’t even eat mine?”
I shook my head and tried to block them out.
