her in place. “You’re dead.”

“Did you miss me, darling?” Gary moved out of the darkness, entering the living room with a gun in his hand. “It’s really quite easy to fake your death if you have the right connections and money you know. Thanks to Haven Corp I had both. I had planned to sneak in and get what I’d left behind, but then I overheard your conversation and saw you with that. You really sunk low, my dear. Your beloved Scott wouldn’t approve,” Gary sneered.

“You’re a real tough guy when you’re holding a gun,” Doc growled.

“You think I’ll sink to your level and resort to a fist fight? Not gonna happen, old man. Let’s make this easy on all of us and the two of you move on into the bedroom, which I’m sure was where this little meeting was moving anyhow,” Gary said, waving the gun toward the master suite.

“You won’t get away with this,” Tara warned.

“I already did, sweetheart,” Gary mocked, looking down at his tailored slacks and polo shirt.

Doc moved, placing Tara on the outside so that he was closer to Gary. She recognized what he was doing and wished she could scream at the injustice of what was happening. Just when her life was becoming beautiful again, the worst mistake of her life returned to ruin it. Her one saving grace was that Talena was safe with Scott, and she knew he’d protect her and their unborn baby with his life.

“Let’s go, move it. I’ll even let him see you naked before I kill you and then him. It’ll be a lasting memory he can take to his grave. See I’m not a total bastard.”

“You’re worse than a bastard, Gary. You’re a rapist, a pedophile, and a monster,” she yelled.

Gary lunged toward her, making her scream when she’d thought she’d pushed him too far.

Doc seemed unfazed; his reflexes faster than she’d have thought, grabbed the arm holding the gun with one hand and punched Gary in the face with the other. The crunch was audible as Doc’s fist connected with her ex-husband’s nose; blood poured down her ex’s face onto his pristine pale blue polo shirt.

She fell back against the wall, feeling as though she was in a movie, unable to do anything but watch the two men grapple with the weapon. Her mind kept seeing the gun go off like in the movies. She looked around the room something to help Doc when a crash pulled her attention back to the fighting pair.

“Oh god,” she whispered, horrified to see Gary on the ground, his throat slit from ear-to-ear.

“I’m sorry, baby,” Doc growled standing up and wiping the bloody scalpel on Gary’s shirt before sliding the weapon back into his boot.

She held up her hand, stopping him. “Is he really dead this time?” They’d all thought he’d died all those years ago when the company jet had crashed into the ocean. She should’ve known he’d faked his death, killing the pilot and the flight attendant clearly hadn’t been an issue for him.

Doc looked down at the body then back at her. “Yeah, you don’t get any more dead than that.”

Tara took a shaky breath, licking her lips. “How do I explain to the cops about...this?”

Doc pulled out his phone. “I’ll handle it. He’s already dead, right? You’ve had a funeral and collected insurance, correct?”

“Yes, years ago. God, this is a mess.” She looked away from the body covering her face with one hand.

“I’m so fucking sorry, Tara.” Doc pulled her hand away from her eyes.

“What? No, this isn’t your fault. You saved me. He’d have killed me if you hadn’t been here. Oh my god, he’s been alive all this time and could’ve killed all of us anytime he wanted.”

Tara couldn’t stop the hysterical laughing-cry from falling from her lips. When Doc pulled her into his arms, she let him hold her, needing his support, wanting his support. “Thank you,” she whispered against his muscular chest.

“You don’t have to thank me, Tara.” His hand palmed the back of her head, massaging the ache away.

“Well, sheot, I missed the party. PS. Miss. Tara, your security wasn’t set. So, we’ll just do some cleanup and be on our way. Doc, you might not want to boink Hollywood’s mom until you clear it with him though. He’s kinda mean.”

Tara pulled back from Doc, stunned to see one of the men from earlier standing in the shadows. “Axl?”

“Yeah, it’s me, your favorite. Ouch, mothereffer, she totally said I was
