Rocked (The Everyday Heroes World) - Julia Wolf Page 0,34

raced. This grand reaction was completely out of character for me. But I was affected—there was no denying it.

I left Sarah and Rhea on the dancefloor while I ducked into the bathroom. It was no surprise my face was flushed and glistening. I looked like I did after a day of bouldering. God, how embarrassing. Hopefully none of the guys from my station had seen me in this condition. I was hoping my ridiculous overreaction had stayed on the crowded dancefloor—unnoticed and where it belonged.

Once I’d wiped the mascara from beneath my eyes and freshened up, I pulled the door open, ready to brave my friends again. I faltered when I found Veego right outside the door.

“Are you waiting for me?” I asked.

His beer bottle in one hand, he rubbed his stubbly chin with the other. “Yeah. Did you know he’d be here tonight?”

“I had no idea.” I frowned, my brows pulling together. “Why?”

He reached out, running his fingers along the strap of my dress. “You seemed really into his performance. I had to threaten to knock the teeth loose on a couple guys who wanted to join you on the dancefloor.”

I batted his hand away and laughed. “Is that surprising? Three women dancing together is like a beacon to pervy men.”

He shook his head. “No, they were specifically looking at you. You looked hot out there, especially when your favorite rock star started singing.”

I rolled my eyes. He’d hit too close to the mark, and I did not want to be having this conversation right now. “He’s not my favorite, and none of those guys are interested in me.” I swished my dress around my legs. “Thanks for saying I’m hot, though. I haven’t heard that in a couple days.”

Every muscle in his body bunched. “Who else has been telling you you’re hot?”

I breezed by him, calling over my shoulder, “Wouldn’t you like to know.”

Grumbling and grousing, Veego followed me back to the table where someone now occupied my seat. The way each firefighter leaned forward to catch the newcomer’s every word told me exactly who he was.

Devon was sitting at my table with my co-workers after nearly bringing me to orgasm on the dancefloor, and I had no choice but to join them.

I came up behind him, plastering on the fakest smile I’d ever conjured up. “Hey, any room for me? Seems someone claimed my spot.”

Devon tipped his head back to grin up at me. “Oh, is this your seat? I guess I should be a gentleman and offer it back to you.”

My teeth dug into my bottom lip. “You really should.”

He kept grinning at me, his eyes raking over every inch of my exposed skin. I grinned right back, watching him take me in.

Rhea tugged at my hand, stopping me from making a fool of myself again. “Share with me, honey.”

Luckily, she was small, since I...well, wasn’t. I squeezed my ass onto my half of her chair, my shoulders pressed between hers and Devon’s.

He turned his head, speaking only so I could hear. “This is cozy.”

I spoke just as low. “I didn’t know you were coming tonight.”

“I didn’t either. I got an offer I couldn’t refuse from Shane and Jeff today.”

“Really?” I laughed. “Where in the world did you meet them?”

He dropped his hand under the table, laying it gently on my knee…and I didn’t stop him. “Not in the world, Kat. I met them right here, at the local coffee shop. They got brave, approached me, and I said yes. Even though they turned my aura gray. I’m thinking it’s back to blue now.”

I reared away from him, colliding into Rhea, who pushed me back toward Devon as she laughed.

Devon chuckled, completely misinterpreting my reaction. “Guess you don’t believe in that shit.”

“No, I absolutely do not.” If I never heard about auras for the rest of my life, I’d die a happy woman.

Veego got tired of being left out of our conversation, so he clapped a hand on Devon’s shoulder, drawing our attention to him. “So, Devon, are you getting tired of small-town life yet? Ready to get back to sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll?”

Devon barely turned to him. “I’m good here for now. I’m not here forever, but I’m enjoying it while it lasts.”

Veego nodded, his hand still on Devon. “Cool. Bet it’s easy to enjoy all Sunnyville has to offer when you know you’re not sticking around. No strings and all that.”

Devon shot me a confused glance, then answered my ex, who had
