apparently turned into an asshole while I was dancing. “I feel like you’re trying to imply something, but I gotta say, I’m just here to do my thing, not get in anybody’s way. I’m working on my music and getting my head on straight.”

Veego raised both hands in innocence. “Hey, I’m not trying to imply anything. Glad you’re getting your head on straight. This is a good place to do it.”

They rambled on for a while about good hiking trails, and Veego relaxed, turning back into the affable, laidback man he was. Of course, he couldn’t see Devon’s hand on my thigh under the table, his pinky slipping under the hem of my dress to touch bare skin. Veego wouldn’t have been so affable if he were aware.

I should have stopped him, but I didn’t. Instead, I bit my lip to hide the secret smile he’d put on my face.

Finally, Veego’s attention was pulled away, and Devon turned his head to meet my eyes.

“Hey,” he said.

“Hey.”

“I’m thinking I need to get you on that dance floor. You’ve been sitting here too long, and that dress is a dancing dress if I ever saw one.” He lifted his hand from my thigh and held it out to me. “Come on, Lady. Dance with me.”

Heart fluttering, I placed my hand in his. “Let’s dance.”

I could barely remember the days when I thought Kat might be plain. In her pink dress, she glowed, like she carried her own internal light. I’d watched her from backstage for a long time—longer than I’d ever say. Like, I may be arrested if I admitted how long. But she was fucking mesmerizing, in a different way than when she was climbing. When she danced, all I could think about was how she’d feel moving against me, rolling those hips with mine.

And now, I’d get to find out. The Swift City Fire Boys were taking a break and some pop song played through the speakers. I didn’t really care what was playing, not when I’d get a chance to put my hands on Kat Murphy in her pink dress.

On the dancefloor, I slipped one arm around her waist as I slid the other up her spine to rest on the back of her neck, beneath her golden hair. She draped her arms loosely on my shoulders, barely swaying.

“God, you’re looking gorgeous tonight, Kat.” I found myself leaning in, grazing her nose with mine before she pulled her face back an inch or two, biting that bottom lip.

“You were incredible up there, Devon.”

“Yeah?” I raked my hand into her hair, gripping her there. “I haven’t lost my touch?”

“Oh no. You very much still have your touch.”

The music slowed, some Khalid song came on. The way Kat moved changed too. Her hips rotated, pulling the rhythm into her body. I moved with her, fitting my leg between hers, immediately feeling the heat of her core through my jeans. With a tug of her hair, I tipped her face back, and she grinned, still moving with me.

“You really love this, don’t you?” I asked.

“Mmhmm. I could dance all night.”

My hand on her back moved lower, grazing the swell of her ass, then back up, pressing her closer to me. “You looked good out here when I was on stage. Made me almost forget what I was doing.”

“Mmm.” She arched back, holding onto my neck as she rode the waves of the music. I never would’ve guessed she’d move like her bones were liquid, like her soul was rhythm. My dick swelled against the zipper of my jeans, jutting into Kat’s belly. She didn’t seem to mind one bit. Our bodies rocked, rotating in a slow circle.

When I looked away from her for a split second, I caught sight of Veego, his beer poised at his lips, fire in his eyes.

“You sure that guy’s your ex?” I asked.

She barked a laugh. “Veego?”

“Yep. ’Cause he’s giving me a death glare right now. Like I’m touching what’s his.”

She didn’t bother looking. “I’m not his. I’m mine.”

And I believed that. Didn’t mean Veego didn’t think of her as his. It also didn’t mean I had to give one solitary fuck what he thought.

A new song came on, and the heavy drums had Kat rolling her hips toward mine and her core rubbing on my leg.

“Fuck, Lady. You feel too good.” My forehead dropped to hers, and it took everything in me not to claim her mouth. She’d kill me if I did. This wasn’t the
