of the anesthesia.”
Elias blew out a huff of air. “You know I was out here imagining every possibility.”
“Which is why I came straight out to speak with you. I’ve been on this side of those doors and I knew what you’d be doing. He should make a full recovery pending any unforeseen complications. I’ll send a nurse out as soon as possible so he can have someone with him when he wakes up.”
“Thanks, Kyle.” Elias shook his hand again and the surgeon gave the room a wave before he walked back through the closed doors.
Benjamin stood with some effort. He looked at Xander. “With that good news, I will depart for the evening. Walk me to my car?”
Xander nodded and fell into step with his father. Ryker and Elias both visibly relaxed when they left the waiting room.
Bekki shook her head. The emotions that ran deep in that family were toxic. A nurse darted out. “Hello, I can take one person back to be with Mr. Ganas.”
All eyes turned toward Bekki. She smiled and walked toward the nurse. “I’m ready.” The nurse nodded and spoke to the rest of the room. “I’ll let you know what room he’s moved to. It shouldn’t be too much longer.”
Bekki followed the woman through a walkway and into a curtained-off section of a large room. “Here we go.”
Killian laid on the hospital bed, dwarfing it. She looked horrified at all the equipment surrounding him. The nurse chuckled. “He needs the IV for antibiotics and fluid. All the rest are used to monitor his vitals. He did well in surgery.” Killian sighed heavily and rolled his head. “He’s already talked to us, but he’s going to be in and out for a little bit.”
Another nurse popped in with a tablet and handed it to the nurse. “Oh, here we go. He’s been assigned a private room. Lucky. We’ll be transferring him as soon as we can get an orderly down here.”
Bekki nodded and moved forward to take Killian’s hand. She placed hers in his and leaned down to kiss his cheek.
He drew a deep breath and opened his eyes. “Hey.”
She smiled; the tears she’d been hiding from everyone in the waiting room wouldn’t be denied any further. “Hey. Why did you steal my thunder, huh? Tonight was supposed to be my night.”
Killian’s mouth tipped upward in a smile before he frowned. “I didn’t see it.”
“Didn’t see what?” She ran her hand through his thick, dark blonde hair.
“Your report.” He licked his lips and forced his eyes open again. “Did you do it?”
“I did. Landon made sure of it.” She smiled at him. “And I hear you took care of Zamparelli.”
Killian nodded. “He killed the other man. Tried to kill me.”
Bekki closed her eyes tightly for a minute. “I’m so sorry.”
Killian lifted his hand and tugged lightly on her hair. “Not your fault.”
She smiled sadly at him. “I know, but I still feel responsible.”
“Duke?”
“He’s with Brody, Amber, and Gage. They’ll watch him until you’re ready for him to come home.”
Killian stared at her. “The trailer’s gone.”
Bekki nodded before a slow smile spread across her face. “Maybe we should try a bigger bed.”
Killian chuckled and groaned, closing his eyes. “Give me a couple days.”
“Only a couple.” She leaned down and kissed him, but he seemed to fall asleep again.
The nurse popped back in. “Here we are. Express delivery to the post-op floor with a private room at the end of the rainbow.” She started unhooking him from the machines with the exception of the IV, which she transferred to a pole she extended on the bed. “His belongings are in that bag.” The nurse nodded to a white plastic bag that Bekki snatched up.
An orderly entered the area and released the brakes on the bed. Bekki followed the man, who pushed Killian and the bed to the elevator and through the maze of hallways. They finally arrived at Killian’s room and two nurses helped the orderly transfer him to the bed. A clip was put on his finger, a blood pressure cuff strapped on his arm, and the IV was moved to an apparatus in the room in a precise dance of professionals who’d done the waltz many times.
Bekki sat in the small, orange, plastic chair that was pushed into the corner of the room. She held the plastic bag that held his clothes and watched the whir of activity. One of his new nurses smiled at her and in a hushed voice spoke to her, “Visiting
