of traffic to exit.
“Okay.” It seemed that was the extent of her vocabulary.
When he finally pulled up to the emergency room doors, she nearly tumbled out of the vehicle, dragging her purse with her as if it were an anchor. Brock was waiting for her and grabbed her hand. “Have you heard anything?”
“No. He’s still in surgery.” Brock led her through the labyrinth of hallways and elevators to the surgical floor.
“How do you know this place so well? Where are we going? Have you heard anything?” She was practically running beside him in her four-inch heels.
“No, Bekki, I haven’t. I told you that.”
“Right. Yeah, sorry.”
“No, it’s okay, you’re in shock and I know my way around because I’ve spent entirely too much time here as a patient.” Brock nodded to the left and they turned the corner.
Bekki saw her mom and dad, Xander, Elias—who was wearing scrubs—Ryker, and several uniformed officers. Her mom opened her arms and she fell into the support. “Have you heard anything?” She asked her mom the same question she’d asked Brock.
“No. Elias said he was able to talk to the doctor and although Killian’s lost a lot of blood, they believe the damage is mostly muscular on the outside of the hip.”
Bekki released her mom and stared at Elias. He nodded. “The surgeon is one of the best. A surgical resident I know is in there with him. I have every confidence he’ll make it through the surgery with minimal problems. Dmitri is still going to fly in even though I told him to wait.”
Bekki drew what felt like her first full breath. She turned her attention to her father. “What happened?”
Her father shook his head. “As soon as there is any information, I’ll let you know. None that goes on the record.”
He gave a flash of a smile and she huffed out a laugh. “Noted.”
After thirty minutes, Bekki sat down with her mom. She listened to the voices of the people around her, but her mind wasn’t on what they were saying. It wasn’t on the story or what should have been a crowning moment in her career. No, her thoughts focused on Killian. If only she’d given that information to Jewell faster, she could have prevented what happened tonight. She examined the cuticle beds of her fingers intently. Playing ‘what if’ wasn’t going to help a damn thing.
She looked up when all the talking stopped. A very distinguished man wearing a black silk three-piece suit and using a silver-topped cane stood at the entrance to the waiting area. The resemblance to Xander, Elias, Dimitri and Killian was impossible to miss. No one said a word, so she stood. “Mr. Ganas? I’m Bekki King, Killian’s girlfriend.” She walked across the floor and extended her hand.
The man shifted his cane to the other hand and held out his. “Ms. King, how is my son?”
“Killian is in surgery, sir. We’re all waiting. May I introduce my father, Chauncey King, my mother, Hannah, and my brothers, Brock and Brody. I believe you know my brother-in-law, Ryker.”
Mr. Ganas acknowledged each introduction, but when he got to Ryker, he lifted his chin and nodded curtly. His lips shut tightly in a thin line. He turned back to her. “Would someone be able to tell me what transpired?”
Her father, bless him, stepped forward. “I’m able to do that, sir. If we can find a place a little more private, perhaps?”
“Of course,” Benjamin agreed and walked with her father down the hall.
“I could leave,” Ryker offered.
“No.” Xander shook his head. “You have every right to be here.”
Her mom cleared her throat. “I agree with Xander. No matter what happened between you and Benjamin, Killian needs his brothers here.”
Ryker stared at her mom for a long moment before he gave a sad smile and sat back down.
Her father and Mr. Ganas reappeared about five minutes later. Mr. Ganas took a seat and they waited in silence. The door to the surgery suite opened, jarring everyone onto their feet. “Elias.” The doctor extended his hand and shook Elias’ hand. “He’s lucky. The bullet entered at an angle that allowed the majority of it to travel alongside the crest of the ilium instead of through the bone. There is a slight concern about nerve damage because the bullet split in two and traveled along the inside of the crest, but we’ll have to wait for swelling to reduce. The damage that was repaired didn’t compromise the joint itself. He’s in post-op now, coming out
