nose us when were aren’t looking.”
She dropped her head back and laughed. That had been a rather shocking interruption. Evidently, Duke could open the trailer from the inside by putting his paw on the door handle and pushing down. He’d obviously gotten lonely and come to look for them. And found them in a… delicate position. Killian’s laughter joined hers. She wiped tears out of the corner of her eyes. Since she’d met Killian, she’d laughed more than she ever had.
Her phone rang as she was looking at the deli menu. Killian glanced up at her. She looked at the face. “Work, Landon.”
He nodded and went back to working in the project management database he’d been using.
“Hello.”
“King. It’s been ten days. We expect you back at work on Monday morning.” Landon’s voice crackled over the connection.
“I’m afraid I’m going to have to take some personal time, Landon.” She glanced over at Killian, who lifted his eyes to hers but kept on typing. How did people do that?
“How much time? The bosses still want you to meet with Davis. The fact that he’s groveling is good, we can use this as an olive branch to the Mayor to show him we are willing to work with the city government and not against them.”
“Landon, that’s on you and the station. I’m not going to meet with Davis, no matter what you or the suits say.” That decision was made long ago. She wanted nothing else to do with the man.
“How much time?” Landon growled the question again.
“Two weeks.” If her dad hadn’t figured out what the hell was going on by that time she’d have to go back to work. There were bills to pay, and quite frankly, unless Jewell came back with some really interesting information sometime soon on the land purchases, she’d have to wash her hands of the story and move on. She’d cover breaking news, and yes, do her time doing the filler stories Landon had given before the Davis debacle.
“Am I on speakerphone?”
She looked over at Killian, who stopped and turned his head toward the phone. Yes, he was, but… “No,” she answered.
Landon’s voice lowered. “King, whatever you’re doing, keep digging. Don’t stop. I can’t say any more, just keep digging.” The connection went dead.
She reached over and double-checked the connection had closed. “He’s said that before. When I first started this investigation. He told me not to stop, to keep going.”
Killian leaned forward. “Where are you on that story?”
“I’ve reached out to someone for help.” She held up a hand. “Family. She works some kind of computer security and rumor has it she’s an uber hacker. I should be hearing back from her soon.” She hoped. Killian lifted a single eyebrow. Damn, that was so sexy. “Stop. I didn’t violate a single directive my father put out there.”
“I think you may have skirted the issue. He didn’t want you to do anything other than what you could do on the computer.”
Killian’s head snapped to the door when Garret opened it and stuck his head in. “Killian, we need you over at the third pour. Cement contractor is saying we have a miscommunication in the yards of product we ordered.”
“I’ll be right there.” He grabbed his tablet and stood up. Garret shut the door and Killian moved over to her desk. “I’ll be back. Order from the deli. We’ll eat by the water.”
“Amongst other things,” she whispered as he leaned down to kiss her.
“Most definitely,” he said as he lifted away. He grabbed his red hard hat and headed over to the third pour.
She snorted to herself. She knew exactly where that was and what the building was going to be when it was finished. She rolled her chair over to Killian’s desk and looked at what he’d been doing. Well, that didn’t look too difficult. She grabbed an invoice and started inputting the information. At least she could help Killian go forward in his work. She double-checked her entries and moved to the next in the large stack of invoices. Keeping busy was better than worrying about things. When Jewell called, she’d make a decision on what she needed to do and move forward.
Halfway through the invoices, her phone rang again. She glared at the offending device and carefully marked where she was before she rolled her chair back to her desk and grabbed the phone. When she saw who it was, she almost dropped the phone with excitement.
“Jewell, hey!”
“Hiya, coz. I gotta ask what you
