her skull to get the excess bleeding and a clot. Everyone’s surgery is going smoothly. Everyone has superficial wounds from the glass, some bruising, but hey, nothing time can’t heal.”

“They had to drill a hole in her head?” The coffee slips from my hand as I mumble the words. “Holes?”

“It’s not as scary as it sounds. It’s done more than you think. It’s okay, she’s fine, Kansas. They gave her blood transfusions to replace the blood she lost.”

“When can I see her?” I sway on my feet, the lightheadedness causing me to lose balance. “I want to see her.”

“They are wrapping up soon. When I know, you’ll know, I swear.”

I’ve been through and seen unimaginable things, but this is my worst nightmare.

Kansas wasn’t this bad.

Jersey is so much worse.

It feels like an eternity before Pulse comes to get us to see Violet and her sisters. Every step I take, it’s like I’m trudging through mud or quicksand. Each step is more difficult than the last. The white tiled floor is slowly swallowing me whole. The fluorescent lights are too bright, stinging my swollen eyes.

“Remember, she will look worse than she really is. She’s still asleep,” Pulse informs me. “And only one at a time, I’m sorry guys. It’s hospital regulation.”

“It’s okay. We will go see Veronica and Victoria. Go see Violet, Kansas.” Prez slaps me on the back as he walks by with the guys, his arm around Scarlett to keep her close.

“I’ll leave you alone. Just call me if you need me.”

“Thanks, Pulse.” I let out a shaky breath and grip the silver handle. Blood is rushing through my ears, and my heart is hammering against my chest with anxiety. Nausea brews as I press down on the door latch. The click of the lock and groan of the door opening is going to haunt me for years to come. The scent of the hospital floods my senses.

I hate the way it smells.

It’s blood, plastic, and death, with a hint of cleaner to try and cover it up.

“Oh, Springs.”

I break when I see her lying still on the bed, head wrapped, leg elevated, and black and blue bruises all over her beautiful face. There are small cuts from the glass, and I’m noticing a side of her head is shaved.

Her beautiful, wild curls are gone.

I close the door and hurry to her side, scooting a chair as close as I can. My hand trembles as it hovers over her hand. I’m afraid to touch her. What if I hurt her more? Even her slender fingers are cut, and the top of her knuckles are scraped.

Gently, I fold my fingers around her palm and hold up her arm, bringing her hand to my mouth as I press a kiss to it. I wish it made her better. I wish my kiss healed her like children believe it does when their parents kiss their boo-boos. Life isn’t that easy. A kiss doesn’t change the world.

Only time does.

“Violet,” her name is twisted in agony around my tongue, dark and gritty with emotion.

I cry.

I let my strength go. I release my pride, my power, my dominance, all the things that make me the invincible man I’ve molded myself into—I let go.

Because I am not invincible. Violet is just as much a weakness as she is my strength.

Love fucking hurts, but the pain is worth it as long as her heart keeps beating.

“I love you,” I rasp. “I love you. I love you. I love you,” I chant as I feather kisses along the top of her hand. I hope she can hear me. “I wish I would have said that sooner,” I say, wiping my wet cheeks on the sleeve of my shirt. “You are scaring the hell out of me. I never thought I’d ever be in this position, but loving you has changed me, and I really like the man I am with you, so you have to come back to me, okay? You can’t leave me.”

I sniffle, then rest my head against the mattress next to her. I never want to leave her side. I find peace in the heart monitor as it beeps, reassuring me she’s alive. “You shouldn’t have left alone. I can’t believe you did that. You can’t ever do that again. You call me or you have one of the guys with you. It’s too dangerous for you to be out on your own. I’ll never forgive myself that this happened to you. I should have
