“They are in surgery. All three of them.” God, I love Violet, but I’ve come to love her sisters like my own, even if Veronica is a little testy.

Void, Satyr, One-Eye, Colt, everyone walks through the door and takes the row of seats in front of me. Warden and Bane aren’t their usual playful selves. They are sullen. Decay sits next to them along with Teeth, and then I see Pulse strutting up to the front desk.

“Of course, doctor,” the same nurse that helps me tells him, then calls someone on the phone.

He takes three large strides before kneeling in front of me. “She’s checking to see if I can have privileges here. If so, the first thing I am going to do is check on them, and I’ll be back with an update.”

“Yeah, okay. That would be…” My cheeks puff out when I exhale “…that would be great, Pulse. Thank you.”

“Don’t mention it.” He stands up and the nurse waves her hand at him. “I’ll be back.” He runs to the desk, and I keep my fingers crossed that they give him those privileges because I don’t think I can wait. I’m about to burst through those doors that are for personnel only.

If I did that, security would snag me and kick me out. I can’t risk that.

“I know it’s hard, but you need to calm down. You’re shaking all over,” Scarlett tries to soothe me. “She will be okay.”

“I have privileges. I’ll be back when I get some answers,” Pulse says, giving me a reassuring smile.

There is nothing reassuring about this, but his efforts mean the world. “Thanks, Pulse.” I watch him disappear between the doors and hang my head again. My neck aches with stress, and I rub it, trying to relieve the pressure.

Scarlett rubs the middle of my back in soothing circles and it helps my nerves. I take a deep breath and let it out. “There you go,” she says softly. “Violet is strong. She’ll be okay.”

“I hope you’re right,” I whisper, then glimpse at her through my wet lashes. “I can’t lose her, Scarlett. She’s the start of the future I never knew I had. I need her. I love her so fucking much.”

“Well, when she is out of surgery, you’ll have to make her your ol’ lady, won’t you?”

“First fucking thing. When I see her open those eyes, you better fucking believe those are going to be the first words out of my mouth. I just need her to live. I need her to wake up, and I’m never going to waste another moment waiting for the right fucking moment.”

I press the palms of my hands against my eyes and rub them, trying to get rid of the constant burn.

“I’m going to get some coffees you want some?” Warden asks as he stands, Bane right along with him. They do everything hand in hand.

“Yeah, that would be great,” I say. “Thank you.”

“Coffee for everyone?” Warden takes a tally. “Alright. We will be back. Keep us updated.” The twins head out.

Boomer checks his phone, then tucks it back in his pocket. “I have Wolf seeing if O’Crowely is in town.”

“Wolf? Is he able to focus right now?”

“He can’t be in a hospital, so he volunteered to go on the hunt for the Irish fucker,” Boomer sneers.

I get up from the chair. I can’t sit anymore. I begin to pace, and before I know it, a half-hour has passed and Warden and Bane are back with coffee. The cup warms my hand just as the doors swing open, and Pulse arrives. He is in scrubs.

“Pulse.” I dash to him, barely feeling the hot liquid spill from the cup onto my hand. “What is it? How is she? Is she okay?” All the members surround me, and Pulse stretches his neck from side to side.

He shuffles his weight on his feet. “The car accident was a bad one. Victoria will be in the hospital for a while. She cracked a few vertebrae in her spine, but she isn’t paralyzed.”
