to pull one taut nipple into my mouth, then slide my thumb over her clit, rubbing in tight circles. She screams and her pussy contracts. The feel of her walls clamping around me makes me light headed, and I see stars right before I lose myself inside her.
“Are you okay?” I rest my forehead against hers as we both fight to breathe.
“I think so,” she says with a sigh, and I laugh as I roll us so I’m on my back and she’s half-sprawled over me.
I inhale deeply and run my fingers down her spine, still trying to breathe normally as her breath evens out against my chest. “Anna.” I look down at her, then slide the hair off her forehead and see that her eyes are closed and her lips are slightly parted in sleep. I rest my head against the pillow and pull in a lungful of air.
I knew things between us were hot, but I had no idea just how hot until I got her under me. Who would have fucking thought that after years of searching and finding all the wrong women, I’d find the perfect one without even trying?
“So . . . you and the millionaire baker.” Herb gives me a shit-eating grin as I walk toward my desk. “You never mentioned you were dating her, but apparently it’s all over town that she was seen going into your house last night and didn’t leave until this morning.”
Fuck, my neighbors are nosy and have big mouths.
“We’re seeing each other.” I set down my coffee and take off my suit jacket before hanging it over the back of my chair.
“She’s pretty.”
“She is,” I agree, even though it’s an understatement.
“What’s the deal with her ex? Rachel showed me the paper this morning after telling me the news about you two having a sleepover.”
“They aren’t together, and he’s an idiot.” I sit down. “And tell Rachel not to believe everything she reads.”
“She didn’t believe it. I guess she’s gone into the bakery and met Anna a few times, and she knows you wouldn’t date someone who was attached to someone else.” He shrugs, and then we both look toward our captain’s office when he shouts my name.
“Now what?” Herb asks.
“No idea.” I get up and cross the open room.
“Close the door,” Captain Sheppard commands as soon as I step into his office, and I shut it behind me.
“What’s going on?” I cross my arms over my chest, unsure what to expect.
“Amy’s parents have been cleared. I wanted to tell you personally.” My jaw tics, and he holds up his hand, palm out. “I know you’re pissed, but it’s done, unless something else happens.”
“Right.” I nod, having no doubt they got off because of who they know and who they are in the community.
“Any updates on your two other cases?”
“Nothing to go on. We’re going to follow up with a few people today and then go to where Mike’s body was found. We’ll walk the area to see if there are any homes with cameras facing the park or if there are any other eyes I missed in the area.”
“Let me know what you find,” he orders. I lift my chin, letting him know I heard him, and he sighs, knowing I’m pissed. “You can go.”
I exit his office and take a seat at my desk. “What was that about?” Herb asks as he rolls his chair toward mine.
“He was just informing me that Amy’s parents were cleared of any wrongdoing.”
“Seriously?”
“Yep.” I look over at him. “I guess it pays to be the son of the mayor.”
“Asshole.”
I don’t agree verbally, even though I completely agree. “You ready to head out?”
“Yeah, but I’m in the mood for a cookie after Rach was going on about them all morning. You mind stopping at that bakery on Main so I can get one?”
“I thought you were watching your sugar.”
“One won’t hurt.” He gets up and grabs his cell and a file folder off the desk as I pick up my coffee before heading for my truck.
When we reach the Sweet Spot, I open the door for Herb to enter before me; then I walk in behind him and spot Anna at the front counter. Her eyes come to mine, and the look that fills them makes me wish we were back in my bed.
“Hey, babe.” I smile as I walk across the shop to the counter. “I want you to meet my partner, Herb.”
“Hi.” She turns to him and gives him a
